Bumper or NO bumper???

Okay. So some of you may have read already in a previous post a while back that with my last baby I chose to start out using a bumper for his crib and he almost suffocated because he had scooted himself and got his head caught in between the bumper and the railing of our crib. This was over 3 years ago now. He was about 5 months old when this happened. Scared the **** out of me! So I always kept it off after that.

With my baby girl this time around I have kept it off as well. She will be 4 months old on Mother's Day. Well, now she is scooting herself as well and last night she started screaming like she was in pain. I never jumped up so quickly in my whole life! Her little foot had gotten caught in between one of the railings and she twisted it. It left a red mark on her ankle. I quickly got her foot out and checked for all signs that it wasn't broken or anything. Again, scared the **** out of me! I felt terrible as well because she had hurt her foot and I wanted to kick the crib. My Pediatrician told me to not use a bumper that was thicker than 1/4 inch. Most are at least 1/2 inch thick. What did you all use to protect your little ones in their cribs and am I doing something wrong?

We don't have the bumper in our crib because of the concerns. Yes, would it be cute, sure.

You could get one if those mesh open air bumpers.

They make breathable mesh bumpers.

I haven't bought any yet, but there are these

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2529738     that are breathable  and these

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3826384   that go over each rail instead.

We haven't moved Blake to the crib yet so I haven't bought his yet. I'll probably buy one of each and figure out which one works best .

Let me know what you end up doing because I'll need to know soon for my little guy.

Even when I had a bumper on the crib, the baby still stuck her foot underneath it and got it caught. I think it's just one of those things that can't fully be prevented. But I understand feeling bad, I did too.

We used the breathable mesh ones with DS and they were wonderful.  He was always sticking a body part out and getting it stuck.

DH and I are TTC this month and when we have another one I'll get another mesh bumper.

We used the breathable bumper until I felt comfortable switching to a regular bumper.  They aren't exactly cushy but they're better than nothing.
