Frustrated, need opinions
Ok, so I ended up back in Labor and Delivery yesterday. I was contracting every 3-4 minutes, and baby was not moving AT ALL besides hiccups. I get my terb, and my contractions took an hour to subside. They took baby off the heart monitor after only twenty minutes and told me "She is too hard to trace, we have to do an ultrasound anyway so we'll just make this easier"
Um, ok. So I tell you her heart rate has had issues dropping, but twenty minutes on and off monitor and you're taking it off? OK... So she tells me "Doc wants an 8/8 on BPP and more than 10 on fluid and you can go home". So we get to to the ultrasound (after three hours waiting, baby was not checked that entire time and STILL had not moved for me). The woman says Jaelyn is doing a LOT of practice breathing...but nothing else. So she sits there for at least half an hour waiting for Jaelyn to move, and nothing. I of course am wanting to cry the entire time. She tells me, well let's measure the fluid and then we will try the buzzer.
So she measures the fluid, and tells me it's almost a 9, and that for most Docs thats ok. My husband asks me, not the tech, didn't the nurse say it had to be above 10? I nodded, and worried of course. The tech then says, Oh well I can probably make it look over 10 for you hold on. And she measured AGAIN! This time "got it to say" 11! WTF?! I asked her three times, please do not re-measure I would rather him have accurate reading that you got first time. "Oh its no big deal this way you can go home"
Seriously? I do not WANT to go home if my fluid is lower than what my doc wants! Then, she starts watching for movements again. We wait, wait, wait... Then she grabs buzzer. Zaps baby three times to get the three "movements" she needs, but I am sorry I do not see how FLINCHING is proper movement to pass a BPP. The baby did not move at all before it, or after it (and has barely moved since)...
So I go back to my room and as they wheel me in I tell my nurse I would like to talk to her before she calls doc. Did she listen? Nope. She calls doc and tells him I passed 8/8 and had 11 fluid. She comes in room to discharge me, and i tell her what happened. And she ROLLED HER EYES and said "You don't move all the time how can you expect baby to? It's fine you're just worrying" I tell her baby has not moved all DAY (its 3pm by this point) and she walks out of room, comes back five minutes later with discharge papers and tells me Bye, have a nice day....
So now, what do I do? Baby still isn't moving well, I am still contracting, and the nurses gave what I consider to be a false report to my doc who will now think I am nuts when I call him.
Am I over-reacting? How do I handle this? I have a feeling in pit of my stomach something is just NOT right!

Girl- call your dr and ask to speak to the nurse. Don't let them bypass you to her vmail either. Explain that you don't think something is right- be persistant. Explain to her what's going on in detail...make sure you let her know about the monitoring and such. Again, make sure you tell her that you don't think something is right. If they think you're nuts so be it- having a healthy baby is the MOST important thing, anything besides that is trivial. Your dr knows your history better than the hospital nurses. With your history and the feeling that something's not right he should follow up with you with additional tests.
As far as the fluid levels, mine was always high but it varied from spot to spot during a sono. So it could be the area she was measuring. So it being 2 numbers different does seem possible. But with everything, including your history, I wouldn't chance it.
Praying for you! Good luc****ep us posted!

My personal mantra's: when someone gives you lip, hand them back their ass and (most importantly) TRUST YOUR GUT! It's your baby, your body - you KNOW what you need, when you need it. Demand better for yourself and your baby!

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through such a hard time. You need to speak to your doctor directly. If you can't get a hold of her, go back to the hospital, or another hospital, and explain that you know something is not right.
L&D nurses work hard and know their stuff and perhaps the one you got yesterday having an off day. She clearly did not see that you were very upset about the whole process and required much more information than you were being given.
You need to get a better answer and although everthing is likley OK, you need to be reassured that there is nothing to be concerned about immediately. Also, if there is something up, it needs to be addressed. A second opinion is always your right, you need to get it.

I'm w/the others...I say go direct to the dr and explain what's going on, how the 'tests' are being done and how you feel. Make him/her listen to you and not fob you off. Don't forget you're the patient...and you know whether the baby's moving or not. Moving because of a buzzer versus moving normally are not the same thing.
Be persistent and demand the care you deserve. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and your baby; unfortunately, no one else is going to do it for you.

Ask to speak to the Charge Nurse or Nursing director. If it is after normal business hours the Nursing Supervisor for the whole hospital will be the one to ask for. Call your dr and speak with them. If you still are not getting listened to go to another hospital.
My friend was in the hospital to be monitored for high BP to determine if she has preE and the nurses kept trying to retake the numbers with her in different positions to get the lowest and best numbers. The whole point she was there was to get those high numbers recorded.
Be insistant.

Hi there, I'm a nurse practitioner (not in OB but have lots of experience in hospitals). This is raising red flags for me all over the place, especially with your recent history. I don't know if anything has changed since this posting, but if not, PLEASE call your doc immediately. Tell him about them taking you off te montor 'because it was hard to get a reading' is not acceptable. Too much could happen especially with decreased fetal movement! Also, call and speak to the manager of the unit and tell her your experience and about the US tech altering the numbers. They should have reported the 9!!
Stand up for yourself, as nuses we are supposed to be our patients advocates, not take the path of least resistant, which t appears these folks are doing. Take care, and I hope all turns out well and the next visit is more professional!
