VSG on 01/24/11 with

Hello all...I have a serious and scary question....I am about 8 days late and have some signs of possibly being pregnant. I plan to take a test this weekend and am FREAKING OUT. This obviously is unplanned as I am ONLY about 11 weeks out from surgery. Does anyone know risks I could be facing? Or risks for the baby? I never in a million years thought this could happen being on the pill..but all signs are pointing to yes. I'm scared. Has anyone ever gone through a pregnancy so close to surgery? Help!!

Take a deep breath...and test...no need to stress yourself unless you know for sure. If you are in fact preggo, there are several women here who can be of grat assistance, but again don't get yourself all freaked out before you know for sure...best of luck!

IF you are infact pregnant you will need to make a few phone calls immediately, call your surgeon, and your OB. You will need to add carbs into your diet (100 grams a day) to keep yourself out of ketosis (this is harmful to fetal development) You WILL BE FINE. But you'll need to be dilligent about getting lab work and eating! Oh and if you are 8 days late I wouldn't wait, test today.

Good Luck

PS - Didn't your surgeon warn you about not absorbing the pill? Mine told us to also use a barrier method (condoms) of birth control for 6 months post op because of absorbtion issues and increased fertility...

She had the VSG. We don't have absorbing issues.

Yes, there are absorption issues with the VSG.  Because the stomach is cut off, the digestion that takes place there is somewhat eliminated.  Gastrectomies are known to have deficiencies in iron and B12 due to that intrinsic factor.  Some people are reporting issues with protein absorbtion.

Even without WLS, dieters can put their pregnancy in jeopardy when low-carbing and in ketosis.  Early post-ops tend to go into ketosis no matter what the surgery because carbs are very limited.  There is also lots of "strange" hormonal stuff happening within the body during the weight loss stage.  Fat cells contain estrogen and when they begin shrinking this is released in and from our bodies.  Three months post-op, most of us are losing our hair, getting weird acne breakouts, softening nails, and weird periods.  Even with the Lap Band during the losing phase - even with just dieting!  It means if we have an oops early out, we have to work really hard to stop what we had surgery to do.

Curious, do you remember what you could eat at 11 weeks post-op?

I keep asking about this because I am in the process of being revised to the sleeve and I want to be pregnant yesterday.  I have to play a fair game though.  We have to come out of it "healthy" not just "surviving".

Best,
Leila

Breathe in and out. Now go Pee On A Stick (POAS). The surgery could have made your cycle wacky. I got mine right after even though it wasn't due then almost skipped a month.

How are you doing with your diet? Past the liquid/mushy/soft stages? I don't remember when I started which stage anymore.

If you get a positive or AF doesn't show up in a day or so I would call your dr's as suggested above. Get a blood test to confirm and check your various vitamin lvls.

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts, so give us an update when you find out more.

My period was really messed up after surgery. First it as weeks late, then it lasted for almost 3 weeks.

Go ahead and buy a couple pregnancy tests and get an answer. (the $1 tests from the dollar store are very accurate and cheap).

I recently had my post-VSG baby after my IUD failed at 9 mo post-op.  I was almost at my goal weight, but I deffinitely don't reccomend getting pregnant before your doc gives you the OK. Eating and getting enough calories was a real challenge.

8 days late, you're freaking out, and you have not tested yet???  Ease you mind - simply test!

You will have to do all you can to make the best out of the situation if you are positive.  Where there is a will, there is a way!

Blessings,
Leila

Why wait until the weekend if you're already 8 days late and freaking out?  Take a test.  Even a test from the dollar store will work, especially if you're already that late.
