Glucose TEst
Ok, so I took the glucose test and failed it. I felt fine for the whole hour I was in the office and then I took the blood test and then an hour and a half later I had severe dumping in the form of everything evacuating from down there. So I thought if I fail I am not going to take that again. Well I failed i guess my blood was 159 and it needs to be below 140. So I call my surgeon and talk to the nurse and she berates me about how I should have never taken that test and I need to be my own advocate and all the rest. Well I can't cry over spilled milk. I listened to my OB who told me I had to take the test, he knew I had gastric bypass. I guess I am just upset. The nurse from my surgeon made me feel like I am doing something to hurt myself and my baby and my OB is telling me that if I don't take the test I am doing somthing to hurt my baby..... I will not do the 3 hour glucose test and monitor it some other way I guess I am just bummed that all this is happening. Just wanted to vent.
I have learned that the majority of Doctors have no idea what precautions should be taken with a gastric bypass patient. I have learned to email my gastric bypass doc frequently because even knowing that I have had the surgery 99% of docs will recommend a treatment or testing not appropriate for me. I declined the glucose tolerance test and just have a monitor that I randomly monitor my blood sugar with at home.
I understand how upsetting it is, you tell the doctors that you had the surgery and expect them to know how to treat you, or to at least tell you that they aren't sure how to proceed...but they won't they will treat you like any other ob patient. I recommend talking to both your ob and gastric bypass doc in advance about pain medication following delivery of the baby. Motrin is commonly prescribed and my gastric bypass doc says that's a big no no.
Good luck,
Lori
