Primrose oil to soften cervix..anyone with experience? (and baby drop pic)
Hi Mommas! I got some primrose oil capsules after doing some research and did the whole rupturing a capsule and massaging my cervix with the oil and took one capsule (instead of the 4 recomended because I'm too skeered to take 4 hahaha)......
Anyway does anyone have any experience with this?
I'm 85% effaced but only 1.5cm dilated and have been for a week now..my original edd was 4/24/11 but based on a hospital early U/S it was changed to 5/4/11 but at the last two u/s baby has measured 2 weeks ahead which would put me very close to the first EDD.
Am completely ready to help my body do it's thing, baby has completely dropped...my belly is no longer very hard and has gone down sooooo much..here is a comparision set of pics...blue is two days ago, white shirt yesterday....

primrose is only to soften the cervix, but is more effective when taken orally and will only work if your body is ready to go into labor. You are only 36 weeks, don't pu****! your baby will be here soon enough but mostly when the baby is ready. I did not deliver until 6 weeks after baby dropped. Also the cervix being at 1.5 does not mean anything! I went in at 2cm only 50% when they broke my water, I had the baby 5 hours later!
Primrose did nothing for me. I was 80% effaced and 1 cm dilated for two weeks. What did the trick...lots of walking the night before at Wally world for about 4 hours. LOL! Also, I bounced on a birthing ball (my Hubby got for me at Dick's Sporting store) the whole last two weeks of my pregnancy. My water broke on it's own in the morning at 9 a.m. on the dot as soon as I got up from my bed. I had no contractions until I got to the hospital about 3 hours later and they had to start my contractions by helping me dilate to 4 cm with a balloon catheter. I had her at 11:22 p.m. that night. I was 38 weeks, 6 days. OH!! I also ate pineapple the night before. Not sure if it helped. Probably not.
Primrose did nothing for me either. I was 70% effaced and 2 cm dilated for nearly 4 weeks and finally went into labor on my due date. My OB and I tried everything to get me to go into labor starting at 38 weeks to avoid a repeat section (if I went past my due date, it's hospital policy to do a section for VBAC moms).
Trying to force your body to go into labor before it's ready is never a good idea, at 36 weeks, your baby may be technically "full term" but they still have a lot of weight to gain. Even encouraging labor before your body is ready can lead to problems like meconium and stress for the baby.
Let your body do it's thing for now.

Hi
I used it, 2 orally & 2 internally twice a day for 2 weeks and it did nothing. My cervix stayed long, thick and closed. When I did go into labor I went from long, thick and closed to 70% effaced and 4cm within 10min. I had him less than 2 hrs later. You can't make your body do what it's not ready to do.
Best wishes

okay thanks for the words of wisdom....
I must admit I'm a bit annoyed by the way some of the responses came across....
even though I have no need to "justify" what I do.....I will however clear up a few things....
First...I am NOT trying to "force or rush" my body into doing anything and certainly am not trying to MAKE my son come out before he is indeed ready.
I am technically 38 weeks today based on my actual LMP my ACTUAL due date is APRIL 24th.....however I was taking a medication called Gabitril before finding out I was indeed pregnant...sadly this prohibited his growth the first two weeks, hence at the first ultrasound he measured two weeks behind...........BUT at the last two ultrasounds he has measured 2 weeks ahead putting him back at the original due date.
I don't see the need to change my "due date" on my ticker because only God knows when my baby's time to actually be born is so I'll leave it where it is and he'll come when it's time.
Now about the primrose....
From my understanding (which is why I asked for experience/clarification)...I understood it to be used to "soften" the cervix....I am 85% effaced already and after speaking with a mid-wife via telefone it was my understanding (as well as reading online info) that it could help the dilation process to go a little easier/smoother.
I wanted to know about the contractions because I've been having them anyway and to have more is pointless and wouldn't be worth the "softening of the cervix" IMO...
I stated I wanted to "help my body do it's thing" because indeed I want to make this as easy on myself as possible...what is the point in suffering un-necessarily if indeed softening my cervix will help the dilation (when it starts to dilate) and won't hurt my baby? Geez!

seriously? you asked for "experience/clarification" and it was givin to you.. having a baby before he is ready isnt fun... its scary and one of the hardest things in the world.. being effaced/dialated really doesnt mean anything until you go into labor.. it doesnt give you a time frame.. or a scale of how ready you are... if your baby was ready to be born he would have already been born... if your body was ready it would already be in labor.. there is a chemical that is released from the baby the starts labor... nothing you do will being it on before then... good luck... fyi- the average gestiation for a white first time mom is 42 weeks.
I used it and I think it helped....i only did the one pill but. By 37 weeks I was 2-3 dialated at 50% effaced the net week 3-4 and 50%...but I didnt have to be induced with this one or over due...so I think that worked. I also sat on the exercise ball and had my membranes stripped. My midwife told me at her old practice they would ask patients to take evening primrose starting at 36 weeks, heck it wont hurt!!
