From what my period tracker app on my iphone says I should be ovulating on Saturday. Since I think I ovulated late last time I am going to buy an ovulation test.
My question is when should I start using it? How soon does it detect your ovulation date?

From what I have been told from the very wise ladies on this board- you should start test from CD10 until AF arrives, that way you can see if you are an early or late O'r. You can find cheap OPK's on Amazon and Ebay.

Hey Jana! The OPK's will indicate when you are about to ovulate - it will show positive when you will ovulate in 24-48 hours. So when you get the + on your OPK, go ahead and baby dance the night away! The spermies stay alive and kicking in you for up to 72 hrs. So + OPK means dance dance that day and the next day. Have fun!
