I had my surgery in 04 I was 23 and 318 lbs I got down to 125 and a year later had my tummy tuck and arm lift. I maintained the weight for 6 years not touching any sugar but Aug. of 2010 I had 7lb 6 oz baby boy and still noone belived I was preg because I was so small I left the hospital weighing 162 lbs which is what I weighed afher I was preg. was 140 at the start but still tummy was hlat when I left..prob is for some reason while I was preg my body was able to tolerate sugar I thought it was just because of the preg other times id get very sick....I was hoping after I had him things would go back to normal and I wouldnt be able to tolerate it again...but thats not the case he is now 8 months and I weigh 190. I'm sooo afraid of gaining just hittin that 200 mark...I start the no sugar thing tomorrow and have been going to the gym 60 min on the treadmill for now....any suggestions or just insperation would be greatley appreciated

Hi there.....I wanted to say hi as I too had my surgery in 2004 and from MI!  My only suggestion regarding sugar and gaining weight is to limit yourself if you do indulge in sweets and try to avoid it.  Increase your water and exercise and watch your portion sizes!  It might help to write everything down for a few weeks to see where you can improve in your diet!  After my last baby, I lost all but 7-10 pounds and then put on another 10 pounds.  After 1.5 years I decided to do something about my extra weight and began to really watch my food (cut out those that were bad or get rid of them completely), I increased my protein and water and then began an exercise routine once I got my food/diet under control and lost the weight within 3-4 months.  I gained back about 5-8 pounds from letting old habits sneak back in and now I'm pregnant with my 2nd baby post-op!  It's not easy to loose the extra weight.....but definately managable!  Best of luck!

Congrats on your son's birth.

I'm just speaking off the top of my head - I have not had a successful post-WLS pregnancy to give my experience...but wanted to tell you first off not to beat yourself up for the weight gain.  It doesn't make you a bad person, though I can understand why it would bother you.  As the previous person suggested, try writing down what you eat each day...and make sure you're back on track for eating according to your surgery's plan.  I don't know what type of surgery you had to give advice on that...but whatever it was and whatever the plan for it is, push yourself to going back to it.  Don't keep the sweets and 'junk' in the house.  That doesn't mean you can't occasionally have them, just don't keep them in the house where they'll be calling your name.  If you are going to treat yourself, buy single serving portions - even if ounce for ounce it 's more expensive...because ounce for ounce anything you save in money buying the 'family pack' will come back to you ounce for ounce on your body if you eat it at home.  When fixing your meals, if you're an RNY patient...eat your protein first...then whatever else is on the menu.  Chances are by the time you get the protein down, you'll be almost full and won't overeat anything else.

Take your little boy for walks through the neighborhood.  Drive around and map out some routes so you know how long they are.  The weather is improving for most people, so you should be able to do that....even if you're back at work, do it in the evenings.  Maybe there are other new mothers in the neighborhood whom you can walk with.  WLS patients or not, most new moms are wanting to lose the baby weight.

Good luck.  I hope to see you around more often.
