Aw, don't feel too badly.  There are things you can do to make sure you get enough of the RIGHT nutrients to have a healthy baby.  I was only four months post-op when we discovered our birth control totally failed us.  My intestines weren't bypassed like a typical RNY but I was still scared about it.

A couple things that have (I believe) made a big difference for my baby's health AND my health is

1) drinking an all-natural protein packed smoothie every day (has added spirulina and spinach and gives me energy),

2) juicing raw carrot/apple juice (tastes way better than it sounds) which has tons of fresh raw nutrients that can't be gotten any other way (aside from eating a pound of carrots).  Packaged veggie juices do not have any live enzymes so fresh is ALWAYS best.  And ...

3) I never eat highly processed foods because they are completely lacking in any helpful nutrition for you or baby.  The closer something is to its "raw" form the better it usually is for you (sans meat of course).  Try to avoid crackers, breads, pastas, pre-packaged meals, etc.  All of those things are so processed there's hardly anything worthwhile left in them.  If you fill up on processed foods you definately will not get the nutrients your body needs.  Eat greek yogurt which is loaded with protein and probiotics and tastes yummy.  Eat sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes.  Try to have as many veggies every day as you can - even if they aren't raw its better than something processed.

There are other great tips I'm sure people will give you that are more experienced than me.  These are just a couple things I've done to have a healthy pregnancy.  Just remember that it is SO MUCH MORE than JUST taking the right vitamins (though that is very important).  You need to eat as many nutrient rich foods as possible since you're eating and absorbing less now.

BTW, if you want any meal or smoothie ideas, etc, drop me a message.  I'd be happy to give you more details about what's worked for me.  Good luck with your pregnancy!

You can only start  from where you are at.  Don't apologize or regret, just make the very best of it.  EMBRACE your situation. Give yourself the best chance at being healthy and having a healthy baby.

Get your supplementing in order.  Feed your body good nutrition - for you and your baby.  NOT junk/ empty calories that will only help deplete your already compromised body.  Having a baby is a "big deal" even when we have had no WLS.

Be active - we can still exercise when we are pregnant.  Walking is great!

You can do this and win!

Many Blessings

I too found out I was pregnant at 6 months after my surgery (I had RNY).  I was scared sh#tless at first, but here I am at 23 weeks preggers....the baby is healthy, my bloodwork came back great, and aside from the horrible nausea and constipation of the first trimester, things are wonderful.  Once you get past the guilt and fear, and especially once you hear that heartbeat and see your baby by u/s, you will feel better.  Just work as hard as you can to get your levels regulated and incorporate some good carbs into your diet as ketosis can harm the baby.  You can expect not to gain much weight, if any.  (I lost 30lbs 1st trimester, and I've gained back 3 so far.)  If you have questions just ask!

Congratulations...welcome to the forum...and have a happy and healthy pregnancy!!! :)

AWWW sweetie, you are NOT a failure!  There are MANY women on this board that got pregnant early out and had a healthy pregnancy and baby!  I would definately contact your surgeons office and ask what they suggest you do as far as eating and vitamins and make sure you choose an OB doc that is aware of weight loss patients!  You will be fine and you will get through this!

Breathe... relax... you're NOT a failure!  You're becoming a healthy woman!  Congratulations on this wonderful miracle.  it's not an easy road being pg 6 mos after WLS... but let's face it... pregnancy isn't an easy road to begin with!  You're on a healthy journey right now.  So I'm sure that you'll be just that much more committed to having a healthy pregnancy.  Make sure that your OB is familiar with WLS and notify your bari surgeon that you're pg.  Breathe!  congrats!
Our little miracle baby boy is on his way!
