pre-buying formula
I personally would not do this because you won't be sure what your baby can tolerate. My daughter went through 2 different kinds in the hospital and then had to change again at 3 months. Sometimes their stomachs are just very sensitive or they end up needing soy. I don't think stores let you return formula even unopened.
I do however, understand the desire to stock up on stuff, and bargain hunting. Amazon has a great deal on diapers if you sign up for amazon mom and then monthly delivery. That deal blows away anything you will find in a store and it's 2 day shipping. Even cheaper if you buy Luvs instead of pampers or huggies.

I consider it bad luck to have a baby with diarreah at 2am and having to run out to a gas station for an overpriced, dusty package of knock-off brand diapers. Hahahah.
If you do stock up, get one or two. Newborn size get outgrown very quickly and for some reason are more expensive than the size ones. They are only awesome when the baby still has the umbilical stump, because of the little cut-out.
