hello all! i am a newbie! i am considering wls particualrly the vsg and part of my  reason for getting it is because i want to have kids. me and my fiance have been trying for 4 years and have had no luck. i was going to go see a fertility specialist but i thought that i should probably have the vsg first and see where that leads me.

i want to know your experiences with wls and pregnancy.

how soon after should you start planning a family?
how soon after did you finally get pregnant?
is it easier to have a child after wls?
how did you feel after you had your child?
how did you handle the weight gain and weight loss?
was there any complications during the pregnancy?
etc....

i heard somewhere that it is better to ttc after wls because there are higher chances of your children being overweight if you were overweight while carrying them.....

any truth to that?

feel free to add me as a friend and i will take you along my journey!!! i need all the support i can get.!

Hi and congrats on your surgery!

I am in the process of trying to get pregnant, and I have been told SEVERAL times that we need to wait for at least a year to pas before we we pregnant. Our bodies are in whats called Ketosis and they can be fatal to a new embryo. So PLEASE whatever you do try you best to prevent getting pregnant right after surgery.....now there are several ladies on this board who has gotten pregnant soon after surgery who go on to have perfectly healthy babies, but that isnt a risk you should purposely take.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I hope my answer helped a little!  :)

~no experience with pregnancy yet, but I too had WLS with the purpose of healthy pregnancies in the future

how soon after should you start planning a family?
most surgerons recommend waiting atleast 12 months...most say 12 to 18 months.
how soon after did you finally get pregnant?
hubby and I plan to start BD (baby dancing) june/july around my one year mark
is it easier to have a child after wls?
any weight loss can increase fertility, even if its just a small amount of weight, so be sure to DOUBLE UP on birth control...the pill & condoms, mirena and condoms...you want to get the most out of your "honeymoon" time after WLS, so getting pregnant to soon isnt the best way to go if your want to get to goal.

there is tons of info on this board...even if you just "lurk" you will learn so much from everyone.  I read back to older posts because a lot of the same questions I had, were asked previously, so I didn't even have to ask myself.

good luck...friend me if you want :)

how soon after should you start planning a family? Wait 12 - 18 months. It's healthiest for both you and the baby.
how soon after did you finally get pregnant? I accidentally got pregnant 7 months post-op and had a miscarriage. Then got pregnant a little after my year mark and have a beautiful 8 month old daughter, Lorelai.
is it easier to have a child after wls? It depends on the reason you are having a hard time getting pregnant. I had PCOS before WLS. After the weight loss, the PCOS was gone so I was easily able to conceive.
how did you feel after you had your child? AMAZING!!! We tried for almost 5 years to have children before I had my WLS. I too, decided on the surgery because I wanted children. I love Lorelai more than I could have ever imagine. I believe my love for her is even bigger because I had to fight hard to have her.
how did you handle the weight gain and weight loss? Do you mean while I was pregnant? If so, I only gained about 28 lbs and am still about 10 lbs above my pre-pregnancy weight. I'd like to get that eextra 10 off, but won't be devastated if I can't. I'm not really trying to get it off right now anyway. I am maintaining my weight for now at 188-190 and that's fine with me.
was there any complications during the pregnancy? Yes, but not because of the WLS.

i heard somewhere that it is better to ttc after wls because there are higher chances of your children being overweight if you were overweight while carrying them.....

any truth to that? Not sure...IMHO genes do have a bearing on whether shildren would have a tendancy to be overweight, but a lot of it has to do with what we feed our kids. Teaching them healthy choices is our job as parents. It's harder when we, as parents, don't have the easiest time choosing the right foods, but that's not an excuse...it's our job!

I wish you luck as you make this decision. Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I encourage people to seriously consider the surgery. I didn't have VSG, so I can't speak to that. I had RNY.

Good luck!

I can't answer any of your questions at this moment, but I decided to reply because I'm in the same boat with you when you say that you want to conceive and that was one of your reason for considering WLS. Well me and my finance have talked about it and with God help we will be TTC next year April 2012 since that will be my one year out. I'm getting VSG also. I will friend you so you can see my progress and ask questions..
