Recommendations vs Reality!!!!!
I am almost 4mo Pos-op, almost 70lbs down, 41 yrs old and hoping to start fertility treatments by August or September this year.
I have read it all, and get that firstly, I am to lose all the weight i can....but unfortunately for me, time is of the essence. My start weight was 355 and i hope to be down between 240-250 before going ahead with IVF. I personally am not concerned with weight gain during pregnancy, nor should i be for the health of a baby....
But, is that the only reason the doc's reccommend you wait for 12-24 months??

This is just my understanding:
Typically during the losing stage, our bodies are in ketosis due to low carb/high protein. Ketosis is highly dangerous for the baby. The body is working double time losing weight especially the liver, and all the crazy hormone fluxes we experience in the rapid weight loss phase is pretty unsettling. Therefore, TTC early out is not recommended for several reasons. Nutrition being a big factor, but the baby will take from our bodies what it needs. It's our bodies that pay the price when we can not eat enough calories/carbs/fat/protein to support both of us.
I'm 21 months VSG, my hormones were absolutely insane for the first 18 months, and I was released to TTC at 7 months post-vsg because I was below goal, and my labs were stellar. Least to say, it took us 14 months to get pregnant, and I'm currently 7w5d pregnant. I understand time being of the essence, but at the same time, I would hate for not to have the information, have IVF and still struggle until your body was a healthy environment for a baby. It wasn't what I wanted to hear with every negative pregnancy test I took, it wasn't the best feeling in the world to still not be pregnant when we had tried so hard, but obviously my body just wasn't ready until now.

I am 2 and 1/2 years out from surgery and I am 30 weeks pregnant. Let me tell you, I have done all the right things and this has been an incredibly rough pregnancy. My baby is not growing enough because I can't feed her enough. I am currently taking pancreatic enzymes, eating 3,000 calories a day, 150 grams of fat and protein. That is incredibly difficult to do with the size of my stomach. The chances of you being able to do that so soon after surgery if necessary is unlikely. Trust your surgeon and DO NOT DO THIS! Wait a little longer for the sake of your child. Don't take a chance with his/her life. I know how badly you want this, I really understand that, but the guilt you will feel if something bad happens will outweigh the joy in the end. Now I had a different surgery than you but they warn against this for a reason. Proven research shows this is dangerous for you and most importantly your child.
I agree with what everyone else said. You should wait until you are 12-18 months post-op. Why do you say time is of the essence? If it's your age, you still have time.....many woman have babies well into their 40's.....what would it hurt to wait another half year longer than you planned to make sure you are in the best health and shape as possible? Don't let the age thing fool you! The healthier you are, the better you will feel and it wont matter how old you are!
I am certainly concerned with my advancing age and my long history with infertility. But, You do make a good point re: being as healthy as possible. I have a follow up with my surgeon next week and will definately speak to him about it. I realize that I cannot let my want for a child over shadow my need to be healthy and able to carry one.
