Pregnancy after RNY??

I am seriously considering pregnancy. Im thinking about starting to try in July which would be my 1 yr anniversary. I have so many questions about it though. Has anyone done it after RNY and did you gain weight? The reason Im thinking about July instead of 18 months out is you still have some malabsorption and my surgen said as long as all my labs look good in July he didn't see why not.

I gained alot of weight both my pregancies and didn't have the RNY just to get pregnant again and regain a bunch of weight. How many ppl are successful at maintaining?

I think you will find that a lot of woman on here have been successful and many woman have continued to drop or hold weight where they were at becoming pregnant.  I can tell you personally- that didn't happen for me.  I am always the odd case.  I gained about 15 lbs my first pregnancy and about 15-20 with my second, the issue was I never got back to my original weight before my second pregnancy.  So, til it was said and done I was over weight again.  Then I had a complication from my c-section which ended up needing surgery, add some more weight from inactivity.  Then I just had not felt like myself since I was pregnant.  I turned out I had developed 1- an internal hernia 2- a fistula where my old stomach reattached to my pouch 3- a blind limb from my pouch and 4- a c-section (at the site) hernia.  1-3 have all been corrected with surgery and I am pretty much recovery from the revision to my WLS now (not a week out yet).  My Dr's advised me not to do surgery if I wanted more children---- is that saying this happened because of pregnancy? I take it as pregnancy is hard on some woman's body, I never thought of my self as small framed, but because of WLS I really didn't have lots of extra space in there and I never really showed with my pregnancies....my babies just pushed around inside and made room...so it caused or made worse the problems.  None the less- I have two beautiful and healthy post WLS babies.  I love them and a few surgeries and extra pounds certainly are worth having my children (if I don't get to where I was weight wise before).  But I think patients need to know even though WLS surgery and babies aren't directly related- there are risks!  Good luck in all you decide.

I have yet to be pregnant, but from what I read (I'm a lurker) on this board, most women are able to loose the "baby weight" as long as they go back to the basics just like you did when you were post-op. (protien 1st, veggies, then carbs, lots of water, and excercise)
If you read back, I'm sure there are tons of post about shedding the weight after baby...I know it will be hard when you're pregnant to not panic over the weight gain as we have programed to want/need to scale to move down for the past 8+ months, but think about the life you are creating and trust yourself to go back to habits once baby comes.

good luck!

I got pregnant last july..nov was my 2 year out from RNY..I had just had my panni removed in may (this was a very unexpected pregnancy...) I have been dx with "anorexia" after my RNY as I do not eat at all at times and when I do it is only about a bite of something. I have gained maybe a total of 18-20 lbs and the last 6 lbs has been fluid as my blood pressure os up and I am having my c-section 2 weeks from today. I am totally all baby and the rest of me hardly looks pregnant, in fact most people still cannot tell I am pregnant unless I wear a tighter fitting shirt. I'm not sure I myself would have chosen to try to get pregnant only a year out, I think you will find all kinds of opinions on here, but remember YOU are the one with the final decisiona dn if your surgeon says go..then go!!!! Good luck!!

I am one of the ones who gained a lot! I gained about 65lbs!!! I am already down 35, and got the green light just yesterday to exercise. I got pregnant 15 months post RNY. My biggest reason was that I am not a dumper and I was afraid to take in the artificial sweeteners. Today I walked 4 miles and plan on signing up for my Zumba classes again next week.

I got pregnant five months after having my RNY and I just had my daughter 5 weeks ago and I am smaller then I was when I was pregnant. I lost all the baby weight plus, so so far it is going well for me.

RNY on 08/16/05 with
I am a lot further out than you are. My RNY was August 2005. I lost 100 pounds (my goal) in about 10 months. I've pretty much maintained that weight since.  I got pregnant February 2010 and had my boy November 2010. I was 126 when I got pregnant and was 166 when I gave birth.
I don't remember the exact dates, but by January 2011 I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight and right now I weigh 121.

I have no secrets or tricks. I just don't have time for eating anything extra. And even my regular meals get cut short by this new demanding little person in the house! LOL (this is my first and last baby)

Anyway, you'll be fine. In my opinion though--take it for what it's worth--one year out seems kind of soon. I know at a year out, I was hardly used to my new body and lifestyle. I couldn't imagine throwing a wrench into the works with a pregnancy that soon. Of course, I'm older (37) and had never had a baby before...you know what to expect with all the changes in your body and eating habits.

Just don't freak out if you gain some weight. Being pregnant is about nuturing a healthy baby, not about your skinny body--as hard as it is. After all we've been through to keep weight off....I know.

Best wishes
Kina
