Research Question
Hi ladies,
I am researching the option of having either the lap band or the RNY as my choices for WLS. I have one concern that I'm hoping some of you can help me with. I'm wondering which tool works best after giving birth to children? I am 25 and plan on having more children but I don't want to have WLS and lose weight just to gain it back and not be able to lose it again after having a child. In a way I can see the lap band working because it seems like you would just have to start getting your fills again, but I'm a little lost on the RNY. Can anyone help with this question?

YOU have to do the work after you have the child. I think you should research from the perspective of how much weight you have to lose, and what your trigger points are, what type of post op life you are capable of living with and sticking with. RNY and LapBand aren't the only WLS options available.
Yup yup. I agree with the ladies. It is up to you. I've seen many women here and in my local support groups and hospitals that have gotten pg after lapband, RNY, and VSG. All women gain some weight with pregnancy... it's supposed to happen that way. And I've seen most drop that baby weight very quickly. I've also seen women no lose the weight. It really is up to each individual person. If you have a local WLS support group I would strongly suggest going to meet people in person who have had the different surgeries and get and understanding of their experience as well. Bottom line, you need to research each procedure and find out how they interact with your eating behaviors and needs. I'm sure you'll make the right decision.
OH... and I do hear from many RNY mommies that their pouch (the new creative stomach after RNY) does bounce back into shape after pregnancy. The hormones in your body during pregnancy stretch your pouch to allow for more food intake during pregnancy. This is crucial for both the baby and yourself during pregnancy. Once you deliver, those extra hormones go away and the pouch comes back. Many people do the 5 day pouch test (google it) and that helps them jump start losing weight again.
