lost, ins, labs for preg women

I was fired on Thurs, with that I lost my health insurance.  I went to welfare because I am also pregnant.  They told me I made too much to qualify for medical insurance,  I am the one that carried it my husbands boss does not believe in health insurance, He thinks everyone should make enough to pay the medical bills "He does", but he does not pay his employees enough to survive let alone pay for ins (sorry a little rant).

I did get a medical card for my daughter, not for me.

I am over a year out and was wondering how often everyone see their doctor.  I had bloodwork done in Jan. everything was perfect he said.

What kind of tests should I have my OBGYN do to make sure we are both healthy.

Look into a pregnancy clinic for low income. This country does not like for pregnant women to be uninsured. You should at least be covered during your pregnancy from medicaid, if not, a low-cost option.
You need to go every month for the first 7 months, then bi-weekly after that. there is also a bunch of bloodwork, a few ultrasounds, and other tests that can come up even with no complications. Paying out of pocket for it all would be insane.
Is your husband full-time? if so, I would look into the legality of what he is saying, it sounds fishy.

According to page 56 in the current WTEWYE book, you can call 877-543-7669 or 800-234-1317 or go on coverageforall.org. Also, look into WIC. If your daughter is under 5, she will be eligible also if you qualify.
Hope that helps. Be persistant :)

Just got off the phone with Welfare, still have to jump through hoops,  Yes Sami is under 5, I need conformation from them I qualify for medical then I get WIC, other wise I need to wait untill next months to have less income, they are still counting the income for this month.

I also applied for Unemployment.  Thinking about going back to school too.

Unless you worked for a very small employer (less than 20 employees), you are also eligible for COBRA, which you have 60 days to elect. If you're pretty sure you won't need any care between now and next month when you might get Medicaid, then you can wait to elect COBRA and only elect it if you need it. Once you elect it, you have another 45 days before you need to pay the premium. You don't have to elect coverage for your whole family, you could elect it for yourself only, which would bring the cost down. If you worked for a small company with less than 20 employees, you may still be eligible for another program that is like COBRA, called state continuation (it depends whether it is available in your state). To find out if SC is available, you can contact the EBSA at 859-578-4680.
FAQ on COBRA:
http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq-consumer-cobra.html

In most states, if less than 63 days has elapsed since you insurance ended, you are HIPAA eligible if you cannot access either COBRA or state continuation, so even if you cannot access Medicaid, you may be able to access another insurance with no gap. For more information, call

In addition to COBRA, your medical insurance should stay intact until the end of the month in which you lost your job.  Sounds like your insurance should still be in effect until the end of this month (unless you continue with Cobra.)  I would call the insurance carrier today to verify that.  Then run do not walk to the lab and drs now to use as much of that ins as you can by the end of the month.  Good luck to you!

They have places you can go for reduced fees. I would talk to public health, it could be that they'll figure out a way to qualify you for state assistance. They did that for me with my first child, they told me exactly what I needed to do to qualify and that worked. I hope something works out.

when the fired me they said that my insurance was only active until midnight that night, and yes I went to drs that I could, and called the family doctor and had them calll in rx for my DH diabetes so I had those until we found out,  When I talked to them today they said they could tell me if the medical coverage would cover DH ,  Which I guess would be okay as long as my daughter and I are covered.  The last I heard was that COBRA cost around 1600.00 for a famiy.  That in no way fits in the budget, even if I was still working.  I have turned all paper work they need.  I should know soon.

Thank you for your advise.

If you paid your premium for the month of march they are obligated to keep you covered til then or the company is required to reimburse you a pro rated amount for discontinuing your coverage. Do not let them bully you into walking away from this.
