Baby Sitting Up

I wanted to ask when your child sat up? Aiden is VERY skinny and top heavy (long torso). He has NO INTEREST in sitting up. We try to work with him to sit up but he is not interested. He loves to stand on his feet. He will get in his walker and walk around the house. He rolls and pushes himself up when on tummy time and moves his legs.

He has no fat rolls to prop him up to teach him to sit. I feel like he is behind on this. I know it is crazy when we start comparing but I want him to sit up so he can play with more toys and etc. He just has no interest. He HATES HATES the bumpo. We have tried from early on to put him that and he hates it.

We hold him up on the floor to get him used to sitting. We do sit ups with him and he laughs. He does sit up in his high chair. He will sit up on your leg and hold himself up while you are are carefully holding him of course. He will go in a shopping cart and sit there (belted in of course).

Just wondering if you all have any ideas.

Tristan was like that too. I would sit with him and kinda prop him up with his arms between his legs... kinda like a tripod. Don't worry though, he was 'behind' on that but raced ahead on everything else. Now he's so far ahead people don't believe me when I tell them how old he is. :)
Just an idea, I have you tried a bumpo seat? That might help... I didn't use them, but I know people who have.

We have the bumpo seat and have tried to use it with him and he has ALWAYS hated it. He would much rather be on his feet, in the walker, or in the floor. We have even put him there and tried to show him toys. He is so long torso, he straightens his body and can come out of it when he stretches.

he's right around 6 months old right Traci?  Sage started sitting by herself right around 5.5-6 months old, she was wobbly though.  Just keep sitting him up and holding him there, he will get the hang of it.  Which reminds me I have some checks for you, can you FB me your address again?  I lost it, but I have 3-4 checks :)

He will be 7 months on Thursday. He is strong. The doctor said he is ahead on everything and sitting up/crawling he will do on his own pace.

They think he is a little behind because he couldn't spend much time in the floor as a smaller baby because he would throw up constantly. After his surgery at Christmas, he has done so much better on being in the floor, tummy time, etc.

I am sure he is fine!

Here are a few ideas if you want to help him:

Maybe sit on the floor and put him between your legs so if he falls back it is against you (so his back is against your belly). Put plenty plenty of toys in front of him to give him interesting things to play with.

Another idea: If he is a little stronger at sitting, try sitting him on the floor against the back of the couch and put pillows on either side of him. Put toys in front of him.

Have you tried the boppy? Sometimes sitting him in the center of the boppy with it surrounding him creates a "pillow" as well.

It sounds like you are doing a great job with helping him "strengthen" him back muscles by holding him on the floor for periods and doing the "sit-ups" with him. It just takes time!

Good luck!

Yes, we put the boppy around him. He is just so long torsed he is top heavy and just falls forward or back. Daycare works with him too. He is distracted by everything. So, when they put the big cushions around him to learn to sit up he wants to lick them so he falls over trying to put his mouth on them.

like victoria said try the tripod position.. if he has no interest in that sit him on the floor across from you.. and hold his hands... and make silly noises or somethign so that he doesnt think much about it.... there is a huge age range for sitting up.. 4-8 months.. his back muscles are key in helping him sit up.. more so then the belly muscles

ohh i forgot... if the hands thing doesnt work... try holding his thighs.. it will give him a little bit more support

Ruby started sitting up at 6 months.  We had a similar issue to yours in that she could never be on the floor or do tummy time and build up her core because of the constant spitting up.  She was pretty much held ALL the time.

It was about the normal time for sitting but looking back, it seems like it took FOREVER for her to sit up.  Then it seemed like it took FOREVER for her to crawl.  Now it seems like it's taking FOREVER for her to walk.

If your doc isn't worried, you don't need to be.  Sounds like he's able to sit supported so sitting independently is right around the corner.  When Ruby did start sitting, it was very sudden. Same with crawling...she was completely immobile one day and all over the place the next.  It's coming!
