I have been doing some research regarding taking prozac while pregnant.
I have read that it's okay and I have read that it is not okay. I also read that taking it in the first and second trimester is okay, but taking it in the third trimester can cause problems. Some information says its a cat B and some says cat C?????
I have been taking this med for about 5 years and neither my PCP nor my OB has advised me to stop taking it now that I am pregnant - 27 weeks.
I have an appointment with my PCP on Tuesday and my OB next week and will be checking with them, but wanted to know if anyone else has knowledge to share on this issue.

Here it is classified as B. It is supposed to be one of the safest anti-depressants during pregnancy. The only thing I have heard is that is associated with an increased heartrate in a baby for a short time after birh (like, a couple hours). I plan on not taking it while I am in labor or the day before (if i can figure that out). But I feel totally comfortable with my decision to take it.
It is a hard call~ For me my anxiety got me so nervous that I had a BP of 200/100 for my best reading...so I was sent to the hospital at 39 weeks with Logan. Pumped full of magnesium sulfate and on extreme bed rest...right side DON'T Move! I could have had a stroke and we could have both died. My midwife suggests I will remain on my anti anxiety/antidepressant the entire pregnancy. I am agreeing with her, but only the safe class of drugs.
We are not TTC yet but when we do I will need to change up my meds, because I am on several since WLS because my levels are so crazy... I love loosing weight but hate that my chemicals/hormones are so crazy! Well that was a bit of a rant, sorry.

I am on Celexa which I think is a category C and also PRN lorazepam which is for extreme anxiety. (I think this is a cat D) - there were big discussions when I got pregnant with my perinatologist and my psychiatrist - who both recommended I stay on the drugs as without them I cannot function normally.
An example of one of my severe attacks involves a heart rate of 150-180, BP full on hypertension and a 911 call with an ER visit as I truly think I am having a cardiac event. My perinatologist has been monitoring the baby closely for issues that have been linked to the drugs and there don't appear to be any.
I also feel comfortable in my decision to take these drugs as without them, I can't imagine what my mental state would be.
Just ask your OB next time you see him, or even your pharmacist, they're great when I talk to them about meds and pregnancy.
