Vitamins.
My OB is fully aware of my RNY and that Im 2 yrs post op etc. well...he put me on a new vitamin called "concept OB" and told me to 86 any other forms of vitamins unless otherwise instructed by him.
To be quite honest, i NEVER remembered to take a vitamin after my surgery, nor during my last pregnancy. (i know smack my hands...my daughter is perfectly healthy!)
Anyway, LUCKILY I havent had any problems and I have been able to remember it everyday since i was given them...WOO HOO!!
Have any of you heard of these? Would it really hurt to take an extra iron or Calcium?

Unless the it says calcium citrate (not carbonate) on the label, then you are not getting any calcium at all. Your dr sounds very ignorant. If you don't take vitamins during pregnancy you are setting yourself up for bone issues later on down the road. And deficiancies can take years to show up. BTW you still need a B-12 shot or daily sublingual.
Hey Chelle...since this thread is about vitamins...where do you get the multi vits you always are suggesting?? My mom is hell bent on getting me back into a better regimen with my vitamins since I had the baby. She bought me a multi-vtiamin, but I would like to try the ones you always speak so highly of. She also got me a sublingual B-12 and calcium citrate...anything else you would recommend besides a good multi with that combo?? I'm still taking my prenatal right now (was all I took during the pregnancy) and plan to use those as my multi til I choose a different one. She's a nurse and she consulted with a bariatric dr at her hospital who said to take my multi and B-12 in the morning and Calcium with lunch and dinner....sound about right to you? I know you're one of the go to peoples on vits...Thanks much!!

I take one Celebrate multi-capsule in the morning and a prenatal at night. Most of the bariatric-multis do not have any iron in them because it interfiers with the calcium absorbtion.

The label says take 3 per day but I only take one in the morning. They are already extremely high in the daily value and I don't want to get too much A. There are 90 in a bottle, a bottle is about $15.00. Free shipping from this site if you spend over a certain amount, or buy 1 bottle from Amazon and the shipping is like $5.00.
I was taking Bariatric Advantage chewables but seriously was getting tired of chewing things, my teeth were starting to feel grimy after a year. I did look at the regular BA capsules and you have to take like 6 per day to get what you would get in the chewable....no thanks, LOL.. Aside from the multi and prenatal, I take 1500 mg calcium citrate, 1000 mg of D3, 400mg folic acid, a b12 sublingual a couple times a week plus my monthly shot. It sounds like a lot but I do it every day so it's all habit and memorized by now :)

Hi trouble,
Chelle is right with what she says above. Maybe you could talk to your bariatric surgeon or email the nurse/ nutritionist to get their advice and show it to your OB. I would for sure take extra vitamins (2 pre natals a day) and extra calcium citrate and iron and s/l B12. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy,
Becky

my surgeon wont speak with me because i havent been to see him since my 6 month post op appointment. I was scheduled to see him in feb of last year (2010) but I was pregnant so he said "there is no point" then I was scheduled to do my 2 year post op appt next week, his office called to confirm and for me to do an "inbody" test, and I informed them I am pregnant again, they said..."there is no point"
I ALWAYS have blood drawn a full pannel to see how my absorption is going, and so far so good. I eat a very well balanced diet only thing I really need to work on is drinking enough and maybe some extra calcium, just in case.
Thanks for the input, any other would be greatly appreciated.

Please do not take this the wrong way at all because it is meant with the best intentions...
After RNY we lose a large part of our absorbtion of nutrients from food. We are not able to absorb calcium from food, or most vitamins/minerals. That is why we are required to take so many supplements. So while your diet is nutrient rich, you aren't really getting the benefit from them. It is so crucial we follow the ASMBS guidelines for post op supplementation.
Usually we can go two-three years without the severe problems showing up on our labs. Some will show up right away, some take time (calcium is the biggest) Calcium right now could be leeching from your bones, and thats why the blood will show proper amount...but leaves your bones with nothing.
There are some links below to help you get on track, because as a mom now, you have more than yourself on the mind when thinking about taking all of the required vitamins
