Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has had a successful first pregnancy after WLS?  I am going to be 40 this month and am still pre op.  by the time i am able to try i will be 41-42.  I was wondering if anyone older has had a first pregnancy after WLS and how hard was it?

I'm 40 now.  I had my RNY when I had just turned 39.  I got pg when I was 40 (in Nov '10) and had a miscarriage in Dec.  We're trying again this cycle.  Miscarriages are pretty common.  Drs say that women in their 40's have a 25% chance of having a miscarriage.  And that is only the statistic of women who actually know they are pregnant.  I do not want to scare you, but it is true.  Many women on this board (both older and younger than 40) have had miscarriages.

Conception was pretty easy though.  I barely if at all was ovulating before my WLS.  However since I've dropped 135 lbs I'm extremely regular and did conceive our first time out.  Most of us become fertile myrtles after WLS.  Many even get pg while on birth control by accident.

My suggestion is that you ask your OB to run some tests on you to check your viability.  I had my OB run tests about 6-9 months before we started trying to conceive.  All OBs will probably want you to get pg sooner rather than later just due to the age of our eggs.

However, I STRONGLY urge you to wait until at least 12 months after you have your WLS.  Your body will be going through sooooooooo many changes in the first year post-op.  But all are good.  Once you lose the excess weight and can maintain that, you will be able to have a much healthier pregnancy for both you and the baby.

Good luck to you as you move forward in your WLS journey and then with having a child.

thanks for that info.  I knew not to get pregnant for a year or more post op and i was aware that miscarriages are common I have just had trouble conceiving due to PCOS and wondered if surgery effected that....

Hi Kiely,
I am younger than 40, but I also have PCOS. I am 4.5 months post VSG and have lost 70 pounds since then, plus 30 pre op for a total of 100 pounds! I have seen a definite improvement in my PCOS, but my cycles are still very irregular. I went back on metformin last week and notice already that I am snacking less... Having my insulin levels controlled is helping, even with the weight loss! I am hoping that with continued weight loss and metformin together I will become fertile. There are many PCOS gals around here.
Which surgery are you planning on having?

I had my first child at 36 It took us 15 years to get preg.  She is 4 now (5 in Aug) I had RNY in Nov 2009 I waited my 15 months po. and got preg the first month, NO meds, No test, NO problem.  We pray for the baby every day.  I have heard that the risk of miscarriages does increase, but I have also heard that lots of mothers over 40 deliver healthy babies.  I am 41 now and will be 42 when I am due.  I too had PCOS, earlier.  the healthier you are the better chances you have is what my OB told me.

Good luck Beverly
