Going back on metformin - link to pics

Hi Ladies,
I know some of you can relate since this is the TTC board. I am now 4 months and a couple weeks post revision from band to sleeve. I am down almost 100 pounds from last year! (30 pre-op, 68 post op.) I am feeling SOOOO much better with the weight loss! My energy and stamina is so much improved. I am very happy about that :)
Unfortunately my PCOS is not responding as well as I hoped it would. Before my revision I would only have 1 or 2 periods per year. Since surgery I have had 3. (One of those was 2 days after surgery.) So I am having a period every 50 days on average.
I've been tracking my cycles and testing for ovulation to monitor my PCOS. I had ovulation symptoms last month (EWCM and tested positive on a OPK!) Then I got my period exactly 14 days later and was so thrilled! Of course the ovulation was super spontaneous, it was like day 65 of my cycle. Anyway, now I am on CD 25 after that period and I haven't ovulated yet. It is just so frustrating! PCOS is just devastating! I wasn't sure before this journey whether I had PCOS before I gained weight, or if my weight gain was causing the PCOS symptoms. I'm starting to think back more to my teen years and am remembering PCOS symptoms back then too. I never had "normal" periods. Even when I weighed 150 pounds. I also had other PCOS symptoms like brown skin patches in my groin area and skin tags on my neck.
I'm just really feeling the severity of my syndrome today :( It puts a huge damper on the feelings of success with losing weight.
I know that I am still very overweight, and am optimistic that things will continue to improve with more weight loss. Weight is coming off slower these days. I made the decision to go back on metformin. I stopped taking it when I stopped TTC before surgery. I'm starting again to see if the metformin coupled with the weight loss will help my cycles get in gear! I am also hoping that it will help keep my weight loss up. Insulin resistance is a *****! haha
Anyway, I am feeling down and know that some of you have PCOS as well.
Do you have any insight or suggestions for me? I am all ears.
Thanks!
Nikki

Hey Nikki-

I was never formally diagnosed with PCOS, but I had really irregular cycles and some other symptoms, just like you. I saw a reproductive endocrinologist and she told me I was insulin resistant. She put me on Metformin, but unfortunately, I am horribly allergic to it.

Congrats on your weight loss! How much more do you have to go until you reach your goal weight? I found that my cycles regulated after I lost about 80 of my 130 excess pounds. I had one REALLY bad bleed that lasted 10 days. I had no idea what the hell was going on... it was super clotty, super heavy... I went to the ER and they told me to take birth control pills! I took 3 pills a day until the month's supply was gone. Then the bleeding stopped. The next month, I got my period, and then after that, I got them every 28-35 days. (Much better than anywhere from 38-75 days!)

I never knew when the heck was ovulating because my cycles still weren't predictable. So I used OPK's (First Response 20 day kit) and tested every morning, starting the day my period ended. When I got a positive, we had sex and lo-and-behold, got pregnant right away. I couldn't believe it.

Just keep doing what you're doing and focus on getting yourself closer to your goal weight and being healthier. It really does pay off. Hopefully the Metformin will work for you, I know it works for lots of people! Keep the faith!

Thanks for the kind words Mandy.
I am about 70 pounds away from my goal, so I am over half way at this point.
That is great news about your success with the OPK's! I got a positive OPK for the first time ever last month! It was very exciting! I really hope that my cycles become as regular as yours. I would gladly take a 28-35 day somewhat irregular cycle! Hopefully the metformin will help me get to that.
Your baby girl is precious by the way! She looks so much like you!

It sounds like you're looking at going back on Metformin as some kind of defeat.  It's not.  PCOS causes weight gain but being "normal" weight doesn't mean you don't have PCOS anymore.  The extra weight can make the symptoms more severe but there are plenty of thin women who have PCOS and struggle with infertility.

PCOS is such a tricky thing.  I have had PCOS since puberty and have always had regular periods...never even a little late.  However, when I started TTC I couldn't.

Metformin may very well be the thing that helps you conceive in the long run so look at it as an opportunity to increase your odds.

Also, if you are successful in conceiving, STAY ON IT!  There is all kinds of research to support the fact that Metformin during pregnancy drastically reduces the rate of miscarriage for women with PCOS.  I was fortunate to have a doctor who was supportive of me continuing it during my entire pregnancy.

Thanks Sarah. I do feel defeated by PCOS but what you say is true.... I am feeling better about going on the metformin. Thanks!
Oh, and I totally plan to stay on Metformin if/once I am pregnant.
Thanks again!

I wish you luck... I will be praying that you will get better resolution to your PCOS symptoms. Are you TTC currently?
And I second Sarah V. about not beating yourself up about the PCOS... it doesn't happen to overweight women exclusively. My aunt has PCOS and she has been right around 120 lbs her entire adult life!
Best wishes,

-V

Hi Violet,
Im not TTC, but am tracking my cycles in preparation. I suffered from infertility in the past so I am eager to find out how things are working post revision.
Thanks for the well wishes!
