Question

Hi everyone!

Hope everyone is doing well! I have been so busy with work and family stuff...my FIL just passed and work has been hectic...but I did go to my first appointment  and they said everything is progressing well. YAY! Next appointment will be the heartbeat, etc appointment Sooooo excited for that!

However, I did have a question for ya'll...the dr and nurses gave me all the info on no hair dye, no lunch meat, no nitrates or diet sodas etc which is all good and I fully intend to follow all the guidelines... but here is where I am stuck --Splenda is a big no no too for pregnancy...and it is the only sweetner we have used in my house since my surgery... so question does anyone have a natural sugar substitute they use instead of splenda?? My husband uses it all the time to cook and bake for me so we want to find something that works as well but is not as chemically based. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Much luv!
Laura

First congrats on the little one and condolences on your FIL. As far as sweeteners I use Truvia.  I prefer the flavor.  I don't know if the OB has approved it or not.  Check with them. I think once you try it you wont go back. :) God Bless!!

Mine just said no aspertame, so I've been using splenda still...guess they all differ. Congrats :)

If that is what their recommendation is, then I would use Truvia. My OB told me I could have artificial sweeteners, but to stay away from Sweet N Low. I was able to drink all the diet soda and Crystal light that I wanted, but was told to take it easy on caffeine. Good luck and enjoy!

Congrats Laura!  I use Sweet Leaf (which is just like Truvia.)  It doesn't have the funky after-taste that stevia has and it's low in the glycemic index and no asperitime (sp?)  So it's pretty healthy.

All OBs are so different!  My dr allows me to drink Diet Coke (thank goodness!!).  I cook using Splenda.

It's so interesting to see just how different OBs are.  Mine said I could dye my hair with no problems, I eat lunch meat all the time (he just said not to eat it all day, everyday), I have eaten hot dogs with nitrates (just not a bunch) and I have diet soda on occasion.  I also use splenda.

I eat lunch meat and I use splenda and nothing has been wrong with any of my 3 kids I think they are all different but I say I just eat what sounds good and try and be careful.

it is nuts how all OBs are different. This is baby # 3 for me (first post op) and Ive never really been restricted from anything. hair dye, lunch meat none of it. even caffeine in moderation was allowed as well as splenda and my 2 little ones are perfect and this one seems to be perfect as well.

Every OB and every woman is different. I know that the issue with lunch meats has more to do with its prep and storage due to bacteria. You can steam, or heat your deli meat and be just fine to avoid the bacteria issue. (Same with nitrates in the hot dogs) As for hair dye, that is an old school no-no that sounds like your OB has taken hold of. I have never avoided dying my hair, but I do usually wait until the second trimester "just in case" it is extra fumey in the salon. And my OB prefers splenda over other options, the sweetner debate is in effect pregnant or not, so thats a personal judgement call I would say
