My son has spots! Benadryl...
My daughter was on Soy based for a few months (prosobee) because all the milk-based ones, she was spitting half of it up. After we switched her to the prosobee, she stopped. Then she started again around 6 months and they switched her to nutramigin. She is definitely not lactose intolerant and has been drinking regular milk since a year old. I think maybe soy-based is just easier on their stomachs when they are very little, I don't think it means he is necessarily lactose-intolerant. Glad his hives went away though :)
Thanks for giving me hope!!

Kina,
Mom's know best, you did what was best :-)
Glad the hives went away and that he is feeling better.
Because of my (pre-surgery) allergy to milk, I took the safe route and tried my son on soy/non-lactose formula and it didn't work for him. But he took well to the milk-based lactose free. Which I thought was very odd...but each kid is different and remember the learning curve. Luckily he didn't have my allergy and to this day loves milk :-)
Have to admit too, oddly, since my RNY, I can not do milk. Whatever part of my intestine they bypassed or my tummy they did away with was the part of me that had the allergic reactions to milk. Very strange!!
Again, you're doing a great job!! Keep it up :-)
Hugs!
I was always a little lactose intolerant, then after RNY it was MUCH worse. Oh boy!!
Then, while I was pregnant with Gage, I could drink a gallon of milk and be fine!! Really weird. That part of the pregnancy was great. I got to enjoy ice cream and all kinds of good stuff for a while anyways!! (now I have a freezer full of 20 different flavors that I can't eat!!) (sigh)
Thanks for the encouraging words!

Again I will remind you and everyone that my son has had horrible eating issues. I have seen dieticians, gastro doctors, and etc. Please understand that lactose intolerance is different than cow milk allergy. Milk allergy is a reaction by the body’s immune system to one or more milk proteins and can be life threatening when just a small amount of milk or milk product is consumed. Milk allergy most commonly appears in the first year of life, while lactose intolerance occurs more often in adulthood.
Lactose intolerance is the lactase deficiency, means you aren't able to fully digest the milk sugar (lactose) in dairy products. If you switched Gage to a formula with lactose in it did you see little white spots or different things in his bowel movements? That would be the lactose coming out because he can't break it down his system.
A lot of babies outgrow the lactose intolerance (or become more tolerant) after their stomach has had time to grow and develop. That is why you see some times that it is better and/or gone at 1-2 years of age.
Please make sure that you are talking to your doctor. Don't take advice from the Internet or people on the boards. Utlize the informaiton found on websites or from other mothers to talk to your doctor. Trust me, I have talked to my doctor and questioned a lot of things.
