I need advice
My son just turned one. He had his 1 year appointment today and the doctor advised we stop the bottle soon. I was expecting this but I don't know how I am going to make it work. Nolan is a big boy. He is 95th percentile for weight and off the charts for height (approx 28 1/2 lbs and 32 1/2 inches). He is a good eater and has been eating solids for a couple of months. He stopped taking straight formula a few months ago and only takes water (out of a sippy cup) or cereal/formula bottles. He will gulp down a warm cereal bottle, but when it comes to water he just sips though the day. Any advice on how to get his milk in if he only will sip? Any advice would be helpful!
Hey there,
Here's the deal. Every kid is different, and I firmly believe in following your momma instinct to do what is best for Nolan. My nugget is 18 months old, and she hates milk. I mean, HATES. I can't trick her at all. So, I figure if she hates it that much, there's a reason. So, she has two bottles per day - one first thing in the morning, and one at bed time. Along with cheese and yogurt during the day, that's how I make sure she gets her calcium. Would I rather she go for milk? Yes. But, I can't force her for beans.
It sounds like you're doing great so far ... keep it up.
As a friend of mine tells me all the time, don't worry, they won't be toasting with bottles at their weddings. :-)

what lydia's mom said!.. if he is weaning to milk they really only need 16 oz a day.. you dont have to cut out bottles all together.. my son used one until 1.5... he was also a big boy and a big eater... he still is.. my daughter ( 10 months ) will refuse a bottle all day if i dont give her one 1st thing in the morning.. but she will chug her sippy with milk.. if i was you.. i would keep giving him bottles until he was ready to wean and by what you said-hes not.
My son, who is now 3. also hates milk. He was exclusively breastfed until age 1, and never really had formula. We tried to transition to milk and he did not want it, any or all kinds: soy, flavored, etc He was not into bottles too much but liked his sippy cup. I made sure he got lots of yogurts, cheeses, and also the drinkable yogurts which there are ones that are better than others and have lower sugar, etc. He seemed to like those and I was sure he got his fluids in. Although my son is slender he is tall, growing well, and in line with his growth for how it has been since birth. He now will occassionally drink milk, more at daycare which is what they give them for morning snack and lunch, and the rest of the time he is allowed to have apple juice, yogurt based drinks, water, or crystal light.
