I havent been on the boards in a long time and have missed my wls friends. We found out two weeks ago we are pregnant (6 weeks) with baby #3 and my hubby and I are 37 and 38 yrs old with a 15 yr old and an 11 yr old. I was shocked but blessed and now I have so many questions....

1. why am I not having morning sickness yet? I have it bad with the other two babies but not now. I actually havent been nauseated or thrown up since after surgery. (I am 2 yrs 5 months post op)
2. is this safe after wls?
3. Anyone else afraid of gaining weight? I know that sounds selfish...
4. I am also nervous about my age and starting all over..anyone else over 35 and pregnant

Welcome and congrats!!

1. Everyone is different in pregnancy and I haven't had an ounce of morning sickness from day one...I'm almost 38 weeks now!
2. You will find lots of women on here who will help you with any issues or questions you have, but yes pregnancy is safe after wls..I'm just one example, but I'm 4 years post op and hopefully will be delivering in the next 2 weeks or induced on the 1st. I've had 0 issues- no GD, no blood sugar problems, and so forth. I did have some mild hypertension, but with a change in my diet and quitting smoking I have had excellent BP throughout now. :)
3. Weight gain- PETRIFIED! It has been miserable watching the numbers on the scale jump upward, but I've accepted that it's part of pregnancy and I'll worry about the loosing it part after my baby is born...this baby is a miracle for me as it's my first, but the weight gain will play a guilt trip on you throughout and frustrate you, but hang in there- you're not alone!!

I can't answer you're last question, but I hope this puts your mind at ease just a little bit :) I'm a stepmom however to 3 girls, 11, 9 and 8, so I feel like we're starting over again here too. Again- welcome to the board and congrats on your pregnancy!! Here's to a happy and healthy 9 months ahead!!! :)

Hi Daphne,
I am 20 weeks pregnant and I am 38. I am only 13 months post-op, even though not planned, definitely much longed for.
1. I didn't have any sickness with this pregnancy (I had horrid sickness with my 6 year old). I guess it is true that all pregnancies are different.
2. totally safe to be pregnanct after WLS - especially as you are so far post - op. Most importantly, yoiu need to keep up to date on your blood results and taking your supplements.
3. A lot of people on here are scared of gaining weight - I often see it is a popular topic. However, we need to put that aside for the sake of a healthy baby> As of yet, for me, I have only put on 9lbs, but am still tecnically in a malabsorptive stage. I am definitely trying to consume more calories to compensate. After we have the babies, we can work on losing again.
4. As for age, I am 38 and my eldest son is 6 and I gave birth to him in London - we since moved and now live in CA. So yes, I am totally starting from scratch again, in a different country, we have nothing left over from my son, we are buying all new. I am embracing it and enjoying it.

I know it can seem overwhelming, but take a big breath. Inform your bariatric surgeon and maybe he will be able to recommend an OB who has looked after his patients before. Due to my age and getting pregnant before 1 year post-op, I have been seeing a perinatologist through out my pregnancy (as I am classed as high risk) - but every thing has been smooth sailing.

Good luck to you and enjoy your pregnancy, what a blessing and miracle,
Becky x

Oh yah..in the same boat..my RNY was Nov 2008..my daughter will be 7 april 14th adn we went thru fertility to have her and to boot..hubby had cancer and was told he would never have kids. Lost 160lbs...found out in july, right after my pannilevtomy in may that I was pregnant. I am 38, hubby 41. I creid and hated this for about 2 months...SO afraid of gaingin weight. I have an eating disorder since the surgery (dx. anorexia..even though I was 160lbs) but I hav only gained about 12lbs this pregnany and am 33 weeks. THEY ARE NOT HAPPY....and I feel very selfish. I have continued going to my combat fitness/self defense classes with the OK of the doctor. At this point I am finally excited! Abby is ata great age and your kids are even a better age. The only negative I see is that we were finally at the point in our lives where we could just pick up and go with abby..but we will still be able too..just with LOTS of extra stuff!! I never hadmorning sickness with either of my pregnancies...good luck and I will tell you 1st hand..it takes some getting used to but in the end we have a little miracle!!

I am 36 and pregnant with twins. My kids are 17, 12 and 14 months now. These 2 are due in April. I was nervous about starting over but I know that I am a better parent now then when I was younger. I thought it would be the opposite but since raising my boys I feel more confident and more prepared for whatever can happen. I did not have morning sickness with my pregnancy last year until the very end when I had no more room to eat lol. Other than that nothing. With this one I have gained a lot more of course and it scares me. I gained only about 14 with my daughter last year but with my boys I gained about 65 pounds each and never got rid of it so of course I am nervous. All I can do though is eat right and do what I can. These babies have to get what they need and my fears dont help them It took me awhile to accept that lol. Even now sometimes when I look at the scales I panic but then I look at my stomach and figure hey the babies are growing well so I am happy.
I love being a mom at this point in my life. Even though I loved doing it before when I was younger I was not ready. I messed up a lot and I did things I wish I had not. Now I am not saying I was a terrible mom but as with everything in life you usually dont see your mistakes until after they are made and nothing can take them back. Now I am calm and relaxed and things dont stress me out like before. I love it!!

Well, first off "congrats!!!".  I might be able to help you out some of your questions.  I am now 6 (almost 7 years) out from RNY.  I have had 2 post op babies.  I have a 16 year old who I had in 1993 w/no problems.  We then tried for 12 years and we unable to had any more.

So, back in 2006 (I was 2 yrs/3 months post op) I became pregnant with my little girl.  I had her at 39 years old/husband was 41. I had her in June 2007.

A year later (2008), when my daughter was 16 months, I found out I was pregnant again!  I had my son in July 2009.  I was 41, my husband was 43.

With my son, I had absolutely no morning sickness.  My daughters I did.  I guess each pregnancy is different.  As far as weight gain---I gained 14 pounds with my daughter (lost all + some after) .  I only gained 2 pounds with my son!!!  I lost 25 pounds after I had him!

I know myself---I have far more energy now than I did when I was 120 pounds heavier.  These two little ones are what keep me young!  I LOVE having them in our life and can't imagine life without them!

The only thing I was a little concerned with the fact I 39 and 41 having my kids was the risk of downs--I did have the quad screening.  I did have this test and it cam back fine!

Good luck....I am sure you will be fine.  I know your other kids will love having the new one in the house!

Thanks for sharing Debbie. You remarked on some of my concerns as well, specifically, the risk of Downs as we "older Moms" have babies. At what stage of pregnancy is the quad screen done. Is there any kind of testing that can be dcone prior to PG to see if there is a risk for Downs?

The quad screen is usually done between weeks 16-18.  I am not sure if there is a test that can be done beforehand or not.  I did make up my mind that I wasn't going to do any unusual tests unless the quad screen came back highly abnormal.  Mine both came back fine.  For me, this was like my biggest hurdle--especially since I was 39 and 41 when I had both of my kids.

I just passed my 2 year post op mark on the 9th. Even though I am not in my 30's yet, I have to say, I just gave birth a week and 2 days ago. I gained a lot of weight (55lbs). I have already lost 28 of it. I am also breast feeding, so even though that was not one of your questions(but it is asked a lot on here), it is possible. My son was born at 39 weeks completely healthy and weighting 8lbs 14oz, so he was also a big baby. Even with all the weight gain and everything, this was the smoothest pregnancy I have had. I have 2 pre-op babies as well. The only pregnancy problem was that I ended up developing Gestational Hypertension in the last few weeks. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Congratulations and have a healthy and happy 9 months!
