question on vitamins now that i'm pregnant
I recently found out that I am pregnant (7weeks). I went to my O.B. last week and asked lots of questions and he had no idea. His answer to everything was "well you know your body" I had RNY a little over 2 years ago and have done pretty good with all my vitamin levels. Does anyone know if I should be taking 2 prenatals daily since I was taking 2 multivitamins daily? Also, I was taking extra 2000 IU of Vit D and extra 50MG of VitB. Do I continue taking these also? My OB said he didn't know but to double check with someone that has experience. So I am asking the wonderful experts here. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I'm 15 weeks and January was two years out for me.My OB said to many vitamins aren't good for babies and can cause birth defect as well as not getting enough. He took me off all my vitamins but my calcium twice a day and one D a day and one prenatal a day and all my levels have been fine so far and I'm having twins. He has even some how check my levels of food they are getting two.I also ran this by my surgeon who did my surgery and they said the prenatal alone have more then enough.
Congrats.

Does your OB know you had Gastric Bypass? You are only absorbing 50% of any vitamins you take. And no B12 unless you are getting a monthly shot or daily sublingual. B12 deficiancies are dangerous in pregnancy. Even before I got pregnant, I was told (and everything I've read online agrees) that you should take 2 multi-vites a day. Even if they are checking your blood levels frequently, a deficancy can take months to show up. Please be careful, you have two little beans in there :) Good luck.
Yes my Ob knows my surgeon knows and my specialist I'm seeing for twins knows they are all in this together and been touching base with one and another. My first eight weeks they did blood work every two weeks now going to once a month. My vitamin levels prior to getting pregnant and tell now have been great and haven't changes any.All of them together said yes I need my vitamins but to much can also cause birth defect in the babies to.My triple screens all came back fine to one more to go.I have also had about four sonograms already to.I feel my dr are on top of things.
Hi and congrats.
You have to back to your surgeon and let them know you are pregnant, and have all your vitamin levels drawn. If you are deficiant in anything, they will let you know. They may have a nutrionist that will give you vitamin advice (but you have to take it with a grain of salt, they are not always the brightest people when it comes to pregnant RNY patients. What you are taking sounds good. A prenatal is not always better than an regular multi. They usually have additional folic acid or DHA but it depends on what you are taking now. Make sure you are taking calcium citrate. Also, a B-12 shot monthly or a daily sublingual since you can't absorb it any other way. I would start taking an additional folic acid (400) mg asap. Be sure you are getting some veggies and fruits in. Your body now needs complex carbs to grow a healthy baby. If anyone tells you from the surgeons office to continue eating protien only, ignore them. Seriously. But start with having your labs checked and then you will have a clear idea of anything you need to add.

I take 2 prenatals a day. I take 2 iron and 2 folic acid also per day. I get a b12 shot once a month. Since you had RNY you have to always take vitamins no matter what. While pregnant you have to add. If not you will end up tanking later and regretting it. I also do take 4 calcium chewables a day. I do not want what I do now to affect me when I am 60 lol its always best to stay on top because if you get low on calcium especially then you wont know till its too late. Always best to be safe than sorry. Add some good carbs and lots of water Congrats!!

Thank you all for your great advice. I forgot to add that I am taking my regular dose of calcium citrate and b12 sublingual twice a week and my levels have been good with that. I am concerned about the Vitamin D because it is 2000IU and the bottle says not to take if pregnant. My OB said huh I wonder why the bottle says that and then he said it should be ok. I am 36 so that puts me in the high risk category also. Hopefully I can see the perinatologist soon. thanks again
