Breastfeeding after RNY

That's so silly that two docs told you breastfeeding after WLS is impossible!  I asked the LC at the hospital where I had my son if she saw a lot of probs in WLS and she said only if the patients didn't eat enough or drink enough.

What was better is that my RNY Dr basically told me there was nothing he could do to help when I called about nausea and asked for suggestions of protein powder that was okay for pregant women... they said that pregnancy had nothing to do with them, and to only contact them if I had a problem related to my wls surgery. They even declined helping out my OB when he called to get information to educate himself.

Needless to say, I've felt a little alone during this. And unimpressed with my surgeon.

That is terrible!  I understand your frustration.  My surgeon and MWs were more helpful than that, but not as much as I'd like.  I didn't want to be automatically passed off to perinatologists if my pregnancy went smoothly (it did!) but I also didn't want everyone to act like post-WLS is no big deal, you know?  Thankfully, most post-op pregnancies go well and I hope yours is!

Aside from the hyperemesis - which was hellacious and still is, and the usual insurance issues with getting the right meds, out of all my pregnancies - this is my fifth daughter - this one has been the easiest... and the fastest! No back issues unless I sleep wrong at night, no heartburn, no blood pressure problems, fainting or dizzy spells... I could just do without the daily dry heaving and nausea attacks! Oh well... the end is in sight!! :) 15 weeks to go.

I'm really curious.  Did the OB and Ped say WHY BFing couldn't happen for you after WLS?  What reasons did they give?

They said I wouldn't be able to do it since my surgery was malnutritive, I wouldn't be able to produce milk good enough for the baby to thrive. Essentially they said I'd be feeding my daughter skim milk when she needs whole milk.

Ok, frankly, I think that's ridiculous.  If you've been able to survive on your diet, then the milk you'll make will be rich as gold!  Trust me, like was said before, your body knows what to do.  You just have to be diligent and basically eat all day very very very healthy foods.  It's so worth it.  I know you can do it!  Go for it!

I told my hubby that I don't care what it takes... I'll drink at every opportunity, night and day, eat healthy, protein foods and I am already good with vitamins. I'll just do everything in my power to make sure she gets all she needs, just like her sisters before her! :)

I can't believe they said your milk wouldn't be any good!  I malabsorb most of the fat I eat, but my son is getting PLENTY of fat in my milk, if his little thighs are any indicator!  In fact, he might be a bit fatter than his sister was at this age, and she was almost a pound heavier at birth than he was. The human body is an amazing machine.  Don't let them worry you.

By the way, if you get labs drawn while pregnant or nursing and your cholesterol comes back higher than before, don't stress about that either.  Mine is still very low but it went up 20 points when I got pregnant.  Pregnant and nursing women have higher cholesterol than when they are not pg or nursing, but it doesn't do damage to our arteries or anything.

I never heard of these cookies, they sound good.

Anyway, you have done it before and you know what to expect from your body. Seriously the water is very important and you should start drinking more now to get your body use to the amount you are going to need, I am drinking at least 3 liters throughout the day and night. If I am not eating or sleeping, I am drinking. The best part is that my body tells me that I need the water too. I also have a couple glasses of juice to add in calories. I think a lot of people that have a hard time BFing is because they are having their first, and don't know what to expect. Just like any non WLS mother. It is just not for some people and you know what dedication it does take in the beginning.

Don't worry, you will do just fine.
