Starting to get scared...

I know this is silly...but I read a lot of post on here and I'm starting to get scared about my scheduled c-section.
It's not the c-section that scares me (it's an unfortunately necessary that I have come to accept).

It's all the stories I have read where the epidural or whatever has either worn off or only numbed partially, etc.

Is this just a WLS thing or what are the possibilities??
I just hate to think that I'd be up on the OR table and have the feeling come back....???

Any reassurances would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

You'll be fine. During labor and epidural can wear off but during the C section the anesthesiologist is right there next to you the entire time, so if you even started to feel anything, you would tell him/her and they'd put more numbing meds in you immediately. With a scheduled C section, it's usually a spinal they give and that worked fantastic for me. I couldn't even feel the pressure they say you feel sometimes. My first C section was with an epidural after many hours of labor and the numbing was lopsided but I was extremely numb.

Thank you Tami. I appreciate the feedback.

My first was with an epidural too...so maybe that's why I'm thinking that way.
SInce this next one is planned, I'm guessing it will go smoother    :-)

Thank you again  :-)

For a planned csection, you'll have a spinal, not an epidural. It's generally a smaller needle since it's only injected once and removed, but the anesthesiologist can usually get better/easier placement with the spinal.

With my twins, it took 3 times before the anesthesiologist could place the spinal and get me completely numb... but once it was done, I had no pain or discomfort for the surgery.

I'm sure you'll do fine! If anything, WLS will make it easier for the anesthesiologist to place the needle since there is less back fat covering your spine.

Thanks for the info.  :-)
I like the idea of a smaller needle!!!!

Wow, 3 times? See that's what I'm hoping to avoid too!

Good thought on the less 'back fat' to work with....hmmmm.

Thanks!!!

I've had 2 c-sections... the first was terrifying because it was a totally unexpected emergency c-section because the baby developed a very dangerous heart rhythm... but the second was just a regular old repeat c-section (planned and expected, like yours) and I loved it... I am a total type-A planner and I loved knowing the date, even the HOUR that my baby was coming and knowing exactly how long I had to prepare. C-sections REALLY aren't too bad if youre expecting them!
As far as the pain meds... an epidural is different than a spinal (which is what you get during a c-section)... with a spinal, as long as it's correctly placed, you feel NOTHING-- I mean NOTHING.  Don't worry at all. WLS- status will not affect the efficacy of your spinal.

Good luck!

Thanks Violet.
The first one ended in a c-section because I wasn't progressing.
This one, I have so much scar tissue for a multitude of surgeries, they said it was highly recommended to go with a c-section. At their advice, that is the direction I am going.
It is nice to know too when the exact day will be  :-)

Glad to understand the difference between an epidural and a spinal. That at least puts me at ease.

Thanks again!!!!

My third son was a scheduled c-section. I was terrified of the epi as I had to be out to sleep to have #2 after 18 hours labor, because the epi did not work neither did the spinal block. I could feel everything so doc knocked me out.

So here comes baby #3 terrified- let me tell you the difference with planned and unplanned is amazing. They did my epi in the operating room, I was so relaxed from not laborig it did not hurt at all, then the medicine hit so quick- Lex was delivered and then I had my tubes tied- piece of cake. It was such a great experience. There was no rushed craziness from an unplanned c/s (like I had with #1 and then #2) the nurses, doc, my hubby and anesthesiologists were laughing and joking
.

I am wishing for a great experience like this for you too!!!!

Thank you Stephanie.
That is very encouraging to hear!!

I guess it does make a big difference when things are planned out.

Congrats on 3 amazing kiddos.

Thank you again!!!

Oh God, me too. And I was one of those people last time. My epidural did fail and apparently the magic word is BURNING! There is no way they can tell you that is pressure! :)

It's actually not that common for things like that to go wrong... but it's not uncommon to worry about it. I'm already panicing about it and my c-section is friday. I've been trying not to freak out this whole time. I am actually talking to my OB about this at my last appointment on tues.

Sorry I can't really reassure you.... since I was one of those... I'll let you know what my ob says tomorrow to reassure me!
