prenatal vitamins?
Hello all. I had the DS sept 09 and I am now 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant. I had my first prenatal visit today (after months of seeing the dr. for infertility). Anyhow she gave me a prescription for a prenatal. However then I thought to ask her if it was big because i have issues with big pills. She said yeah it's a horse pill, so I asked if it came in chewable form. She said she could give me a prescription for a chewable but it tastes disgusting. She said when she was pregnant she took the gummy prenatals. I went to the store today and got them. i get home and realize there are 4 carbs per serving so since i take 2 servings a day that's 8 carbs a day in vitamins!! don't get me wrong I'm not trying to lose any more weight while pregnant, but i certainly don't want to waste 8 carbs a day of vitamins if i don't have to either. Do any of you know of any good over the counter chewable vitamins? Thanks!!!
Oh dear. Don't take gummy vites, they're only slightly better than taking nothing at all.
Did you ever try Bariatric Advantage chewable multi in grape? They are pretty decent and has double the quantity of most everything since they were designed for us. You can go on their website and ask for some samples, they will send you a nice little package.
I also ordered Celebrate multivite capsule (because personally I am getting tired of chewables and it is NOT big at all. The size of a tylenol. You can go on Celebrate and BA websites for the nutrition specifics. They have more than any prenatal would, except DHA.
Good luck.

Ya know now that you say that I should have known not to take flinstone gummies. When I was a pre-op before wls was ever a thought in my head I took gummy vitamins. When years later at my pre-op consult I asked if it was ok to continue these and she said gosh no, you shouldnt be taking them now. So yeah i should have known that but thanks for reminding me. I've heard others say the BA chewables are good so i might order a sample of them. Before I got pregnant I used to take the BA ADEK and those werent bad. Thanks again for responding!!
You really should post on the DS forum too. Supplementation with the DS is crucial without a pregnancy and with well, you must try and get it as right as it can be. Gummies are for tots, not adults with No WLS, and especially not for adults with WLS and serious malabsorbancy. Yeah, I know they say "adult" on them still, they are crappy and so much less than you need.
Good Luck with your pregnancy. There are a few DSers on this forum who have had successful pregnancies but it is important that you get all the info you possibly can. There are DSers who don't post here who have had post-op pregnancies on the DS form.
Best,
Leila

Thank you for your suggestions and I do try to stay aboard on the DS forum. However most people over there follow vitaladys vitamin schdule and consider if sacrilege if you do not. No two people are the same. Some people I'm sure the vitalady schedule works just fine for. I tried it out for a couple weeks and I felt doped up and sick all the time. I stopped it an started following my DRs recomendded schedule and felt tons better. Not to mention my doctor gets pissed about that vitamin regime because she personally has had 3 patients who become toxic in copper because of that schedule one getting very sick because of it. I am someone who doesn't have to supplement as much as some. Vitamins are important for anyone who has had WLS not just the DS. I'm not proud to admit this but my first 9 months post op I was not the best vitamin taker. I probably only remembered to take my meds 1/4 of the time if that. I went in for blood work at 9 months expecting the worst and everything was normal except my vitamin D was borderline low. After that appointment I don't know what changed but I have not missed a single pill one day. iphone pill reminder apps do the trick! Anyhow my point is not everyone has to uber medicate themselves to be healthy, you know? Before I found out I was pregnant I took 4 flinstones, 1 b-12. 1 b-1 weekly, 1 ADEK and 1D3. My doctors have talked and I now as a pregnant lady am supposed to take 1 multivitamin, 2 prenatal vitamins b-12 weekly, b-1 weekly and d3 weekly. Quite the downgrade for sure but I am very comfortable with my doctors airing on the side of caution, you know? They don't take me off meds just to get their kicks and see how quickly they can bring back up my levels as folks on the DS forum would have you believe. I am a true believer in we have to be our own health advocate, but there are times we just need to shut up and realize we may not know more than the doctor. Thanks again for your advice, I really appreciate it!
