Curious after Mariah & all the multiples . . . are this assisted conceptions?

How perfect, Mariah Carey is 41 and having not only twins, but 1 boy and 1 girl.  Jennifer Lopez had 1 girl and 1 boy at 41  and there are many more that are not coming to mind right now.  Then I see over here on this pregnancy post-op forum - we've had many, many twins and a couple triplets.

Are these conceptions assisted?  And to go a little further, are people like Mariah choosing their babies gender?

I know we have lots of natural (without assistance) multiple conceptions especially when we women are in "advanced maternal age" 35+  because well, our eggs are "old" and undpredictable.

What are your thoughts about this or if you had twins+, your experience.

Sorry to hear that you're iced in. We got a little here, but mostly rain. I don't know about assistance in celebs getting pregnant, but I believe that boy-girl fraternal twins are the most common type. My mother had 2 single pregnancies (both girls) and then boy-girl twins with no assistance.

Wow, I didn't know that boy/girl twins were the most common.  That is real exciting!  My ex-boyfriend had a twin sister . . .  and she had fraternal girls in her 20's.  Hmmm!  I wish I had lots of $$$$, I'd pray for 2 sets of  twins right this moment .

Well statistically you have a 50/50 chance of getting a boy or girl. Sperm is half each... and to get boy girl twins the momma drops two eggs... which is more common than the egg splittling. That's caused by a genetic abnormality.

Well... that's about all the genetics I remember from college... maybe some eye color and down's syndrome stuff. LOL. :)

Well once you get past 40, your chances of "naturally" concieving twins jumps from 3% to 17%,  and as was previously mentioned, boy/girl fraternal twins are statistically the most common combination. So I guess there is a chance that all these celebrities are getting pregnant without medical help... but it does make you stop and question since it seems to be happening way more often to celebrities. lol

It always amazes me the number of people who will stop me and ask if my twins were "natural"... It just seems like a really personal question to ask a complete stranger! For the reccord they were "natural" and a HUGE surprise since I was on birth control pills at the time. LOL 

My girls are identical, which happens spontaneously, not caused by a "genetic abnormality" as the other poster said... the causes are generally unknown and unidentified- I was just super lucky I guess! Genetics only plays a part in Fraternal twins.

Mine were natural but 2 girls lol. I am 36 though so chances went up for age cause they say I am old. HEEHEE

I've wondered about that too Zee. After John Travolta and his wife had their baby boy I wondered if they had another boy on purpose. She very advanced maternal age and got pregnant quickly... it just seemed too perfect. But who knows?
