When to see a Specialist?

And yet another BFN. Poo! So hubby and I have decided we're still in this and to see a specialist. I have a few questions of you that have been through this, but first a little back-story ... I'll be 36 y.o. in a few months, we've been trying for our second child since Sept. '09 and have had 2 miscarriages during this time. I started Clomid in June '10, got pregnant and miscarried and have not had a BFP since. I take the Clomid, use a calendar, temp, OPK, monitor CM, over-sex and still unsuccessful.

Should we see a specialist at this point? What kind? How does that work out?

TIA y'all!
Cathie

Cathie - I know you are charting.....do you know if you are ovulating?  If you aren't ovulating, call your dr, and they should increase the Clomid.  If you are ovulating, your husband should get his sperm checked.  My dr did warn me about too much sex during the time around ovulation. I took Clomid on days 5-9.  Intercourse was scheduled for days 10, 12, 14, and 15.  He said too much sex could lead to lower sperm counts on a day you might need them to be up!!!  I'm not a pro on this by any means, just suggestions.  Praying it all works out for you.

As far as I know I am ovulating but it is a painful process or me especially while taking the Clomid. During "ovulation" days it hurts to sit down and continues for several days after! I talked to my OB about the pain and she just gave me the "that's expected with Clomid" speech.

As for our sex schedule, it's at most every other day - for us, that's over-sexed. LOL!

Thanks for your reply and prayers!

Yes -- go to an RE (reproductive endocrinologist).  If you are 35 and over, if no successful pregnancy for a year, it warrants a trip to the specialist.   It may be an easy fix for them, but don't waste your time with regular OBs.

They will do a blood work up on different days of your cycle, take your history, etc., and then come up with a plan.  They will also have your husband do a semen analysis to get all bases covered.

Good luck.

Ann, thanks so much for your reply! We both want some answers and are willing to do whatever we can.

I hate Clomid. It's doing terrible things to my body! Some days im in so much pain from "ovulation" that I have to sit softly and slowly and then it continues on days after.
I'll keep you girls updated.

Thank you again!

When you go to the RE -- if they suggest more clomid (though I doubt it) -- ask if you can do Femara instead.  It is a little nicer on the side effect side and has pregnancy rates that rival clomid.  It is a breast cancer drug that they have found to have fertile side effects.

HI Cathie,

I would definatley go see an RE.  They are more specialized in getting you pregnant and you don't want to keep wasting time!!!

Good luck to you and I hope it all works out!!!!!

Sorry this is a late response!  We tried for a year with no luck, and are now 36, almost 37.  Went for a consultation with a RE, got an US to find that I have polyps on my uterus.  Had those removed this past week with surgery.  The Dr is hopeful that this will increase our chances, however is putting us through more testing, HSG, I believe if we are unsuccessful after one month.

Even with just starting this journey with my RE, I highly recommend this route!  He is not messing around!
