Pregnancy after surgery
Hi, I am 10 pounds away from being able to go in for surgery. I am confused as to which surgery is best for pregnancy. I was thinking about doing the Lap Band and now I am thinking of Gastric. I don't know anyone who's been pregnant after Gastric. Looking to find the pros and cons of each when pregnant. Thanks!
hi there...I can't speak from experience because I have yet to experience pregnancy, but the main reason behind my choice for weight loss surgery was so i could have healthy pregnancies in the future.
I went with RNY, but honestly if you are like I was pre-op then any WLS is better then going thru pregancy as I was pre-op @ 315lbs.
So do your research...you will probably find what I did...there really arent any more/different risks with pregnancy post-op verse pregnancy while morbidly obese.
good luck on whatever you decide..oh and where in NH are you???

Hi there! Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I can tell you my experience. I had RNY 4 years ago. Lost around 140lbs total. I regained some, but still struggled with fertility issues. I found out in June that I was pregnant and it was a complete shock. We weren't trying, but weren't not trying...but after 2 years of this same circus act I just expected it wouldn't happen. Well, obviously it did LOL
Anywho, I've had a very easy pregnancy- no morning sickness, complications, or real problems. I am due in a little over 4 weeks. I know 100% that if I wouldn't have had this surgery, I probably wouldn't have had the small chance of conceiving that I did. Loosing all the weight was definitely worth it to me and the I would go back and do the RNY again in a heartbeat. :)
Best of luck in your decision!! :)

Hey there!
There are lots and lots of women here who have had every type of surgery, so this is a good resource for you! There are obviously a lot of things to take into consideration, but it is possible to have totally healthy and normal pregnancies regardless of which procedure you choose.
I had the lap-band 2+ years ago and am 38 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My personal experience has been absolutely wonderful. I have had an easy pregnancy (minimal nausea, no vomiting, no health issues) but I can't attribute that to my surgery.
Before my band, I had really irregular periods. My husband and I never used birth control, and I never got pregnant... but we weren't trying to. After my surgery and I lost around 80 pounds, my cycles regulated. And when we were ready to start trying, I got pregnant right away.
One thing I like about having the band while pregnant is that I didn't have to worry about having so many blood labs and tests done throughout my pregnancy. There are minimal malabsorption issues (if any) and I didn't have to take any special vitamins other than my prenatal. I was able to have some fluid taken out of my band and I was able to eat whatever I wanted without worrying about dumping or getting the shakes.
Anyway, having one surgery over the other is no guarantee that your pregnancy will or will not be without complications. Everyone is different! Just choose whichever one is best suited to your lifestyle, your needs, and your goals. Either way, once you lose the weight, you'll be a lot happier for it.

The reason I chose VSG (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) is that your body doesn't malabsorb as much as RNY so you can have a much healthier pregnancy & VSG has MUCH LOWER complication rate than either RNY or the band. When I was researching the different kinds of surgery, I heard so many horror stories of people whose bands had eroded into their stomach that I was scared of the band. There are quite a few "band to VSG revisions" on the VSG forum, & a few who wanted to get revisions but couldn't due to the damage the band caused. If you go to the failed surgeries forum, you'll probably find out more information. Good luck!
