pregnancy vitamin schedule

Hello all,

I am 5 weeks pregnant, just found out recently. I had an appointment with my surgeon today. Before my visit my vitamins i was on was:

4 flinstone complete vitamins daily

1 folic acid daily

1 b-12 daily

1 50,000 iu vitamin D daily

1 ADEK bariatric advantage daily

1 b-1 weekly.

My labs were PUUUURFECT, thankfully. However due to me being pregnant they are changing my vitamins. They said it is better to get low on a vitamin and have to suplement then it is to become toxic in something. So they are changing my vitamin schedule to:

1 flinstone chewable daily

1 prenatal daily

1 b-12 weekly

1 b-1 weekly.

So I guess my question is does this sound normal to you? I'm just worried my levels that are perfect now are going to TANK once i am removed from basically all of my pills. I know what they said is true ... better to have to recover low levels than get them too high, just still worried they will get super low. Thanks all!!

Hi,
I think the Dr is concerned about the A (as retinol) being too high for a pregnant person. If you like the way flinstones taste, you should try BA multi chewable in grape. Taste fine and is more tailored to WLS. And personally I would still take D3, just not that high amount. Maybe like 5000mg a day on top of what is in your multi.  And B12 is very important, there is no other way to get it from food when you have RNY. Just a shot, sublingual or nose spray.  I don't know why they would NOT want you to take folic acid being you are pregnant. Trust me, please don't give up you folic acid or B-12. They are very important to a pregnant person, especially one who malabsorbs half their vitamins.

First of all, congratulations!

I'm 37 weeks into my pregnancy and 3+ years out from a RNY procedure.

My OB and I had a long talk about what kind of vitamin overload the baby would get on my regular regimine (because the baby gets everything first) and we decided that since my blood levels were moslty good (a little low on B and Iron) going into the pregnancy that a good prenatal would be sufficient.

Since then I've added a heartburn pill and a slow obsorption iron.  Other than that, I'm living on cottage cheese and yogurt (yummy!) and my calcium levels have remained good.

I was sad about the heartburn.  I hadn't had any issues from the moment my surgery was completed, but darn this little baby pushing my tummy into even newer configurations.  :)

Once the baby arrives then I'll be back to the regular vitamin schedule unless the pediatrician objects  due to breastfeeding.

Like always, a good relationship with your primary doc and OB is critical.
Happy and healthy!  What more could you ask for?
