Glucose Tolerance Test
Anyone who has been pregnant, how did you do the glucose tolerance test? I have read that women who have had gastric bypass can not drink whatever they give you due to the high sugars in it. When I asked my ob/gyn about it she said she wasnt sure and they have only had a handful of patients who have had gb (that wasnt too reassuring). And we have some time to figure it out(I am only 12 wks)
Just wondering what I will have to do when the time comes.

When I had to have my blood sugars tested, at 16 weeks my doctor did a panel workup of my ha1c levels on top of my down syndrome markers bloodwork. These levels are an estimate of the sugars in your blood over several months. I also repeated the test at 28 weeks. My levels came back within the normal ranges and I did not have to do the glucose tolerance or any finger sticks. Hope that helps.
I've heard of others on here doing finger sticks throughout the day for several days, but those are 2 options you might want to discuss with your docs. Hope that helps! :)

I had to have the test twice, I took the drink, and got sick, and that is coming from a non dumper, but at least I do not have GD. They made me do it because baby was measuring 4 weeks large and they told me that the test was the most efficient way of testing. I am glad I did not fail, because I was NOT about to put myself through that a third time.
I actually went to my doc for a colpo in jan 20th and i was informed of having to do a glucose test due to me being poly cystic ovarian syndrome and we are prone to diabetes in the future and possible other issues like cervical cancer as well. So on feb 10 i get to find out what im having and do a glucose test.. have to drink that stuff down in 5 mins
and have blood drawn with in an hour of drinking.

I was concerned too, but my OB gave me a choice, no test and then we would treat me as if I had GD, so I relented and did the test.
The drink wasn't terrible - 50 g of sugar in a 6 oz of liquid. I had 15 mintues to get in and didn't have any trouble. I felt fine at first and then a little woozy for about 15 mintues but it passed. They draw your blood at the 1 hour mark, which gives everything time to pass through the system.
I also did the whole test start to finish at the clinic even though they said I could drink it at home and go in. I figured that it would be better to be in one place rather than feeling like crap but in the car. In the end, it was easy. My worry was far worse than the actual test.
I'm not a "dumper" but do try to limit sugar (even the smallest amount of ice cream sends me into burping, tooting agony) and this test was fine.
I also made sure I was well hydrated before the test and had water and a plan for food after.
I hope that helps. BTW my results were normal. (woo woo) .

Happy and healthy! What more could you ask for?
I am going in to take mine in the morning, and logged on here to see if anyone else had experience. I hope I have a good experience. I have already warned the doctors that they may have to give me a bed if I get sick to lay down on! I am 28 weeks.. and this is my second baby..but my first since my surgery.
