pre-op with birth control question...
Hi everyone,
I know this is a strange question for this forum, but I figure there is enough people on here that can give me some answers. I am pre-op but I always hear lots of stories about people who find themself pregnat a few months post op... and even though my husband and I have not been using birth control for over 5 years TTC and not gotten pregnant, but I am sure that once I have surgery, knowing my luck, it will happen when it shouldn't.
With that in mind, what birth control did you use? Did it work? Would you recommend it to someone else?
Thanks in advance!

It depends on your surgery but RNY-ers tend to have issues with absorbing birth control pills. I found myself pregnant 7 months out because I couldn't properly absorb birth control pills. I would recommend something like the nuvaring or implanon or something like that... and ALWAYS use condoms.

I was taking the pill and got preggers about 6 months out. I would suggest going with Nuvaring or the patch or Depo shot. Something that wouldn't be affected by the malabsorption (although my surgeon said we absorb the pill...fail.) Those who've had children find IUDs like Mirena successful as well.
I cant say what WILL work but I can tell you that Ortho Tri Cyclen did NOT work for me. I had surgery Aug 2 and got pregnant at the end of September while religiously taking my pill. Luckily, all is well with my pregnancy but the pill absolutely did not work for me which is odd because I had gastric sleeve surgery and have no malabsorbtion issues. Apparently mine wasa hormone issue! gOOD LUCK!

Wow, how are you handeling the pregnancy? How far along are you now? Have you continued to lose weight? Just curious, as I am 1 1/2 years post op and 20 weeks preggo and I dont think that after 2 months of surgery I would have been able to do it, I had a really rough time in the beginning. Wishing you the best of luck and a happy and healthy pregnancy!!!
Im 20 weeks now too. When is your due date? Mine is june 12th but im already scheduled for a c section on june 9th.all is well. I was obviously DEVASTATED at first but am happy now that I know that everything is okay. . I had lost 45 when I found out and as of now have lost 63 but havnt really lost anything a few weeks now. Things have slowed down tremendously. The docs all say I could continue to lose safely as long as Im making sure to get all my protein & vitamins. They said I might not continue to lose but that if I did it would be okay. I still have about 47 left to lose so im hoping that I will at least continue to lose after the baby comes if I dont keep losing during. I wish you all the best as well. We're halfway there!!

An IUD is what I went with. I absolutely loved it. FIrst I had 2 Mirena's but my body expelled both of them, and then I had the Paraguard in which my body accepted. I loved them both, with the exception that the Paraguard gave me heavy heavy heavy bleeding and I didn't get a menses with the Mirena which was sweet!! Good luck to you.
If I had been allowed, I would have gotten an IUD hands down. I have a history of ectopic pregnancy rupture, so I am not allowed the IUD. MY oral BC failed for one of two reasons 1. No one told me that the lap surgery i had to repair scar tissue would impact my BC or 2. I just wasn't absorbing what I was taking.
I would go for shot second if I couldn't do the IUD.
That said I am going the permenant route after this little one LOL
