quitting Metformin at 12wks
Hello! I am 7wks pregnant and I take Metformin for Insulin Resistance. My OB says I will stop Metformin at 12wks. I am curious if anyone else quit Metformin during pregnancy and how the rest of the pregnancy went without it. I tried testing the waters last spring and gained 12 pounds within 2 very short weeks so I'm a bit nervous that I'll gain more weight than I want to for this pregnancy. I was exercising 5 days/week and I wasn't being totally senseless with my food choices. A little insight would be greatly appreciated!
TIA

My only experience with Metformin was negative... I had a horrible allergic reaction to it that practically left me at death's door, lol. You're probably going to want to discuss your concerns with your endocrinologist. As long as you're sensible about your diet and if you can get some light exercise, you should be able to keep your weight under control. Focus on the little one inside of you for now. And congratulations!

Tia,
Insulin Resistant~ I would be concerned at least that you may develop Gestational Diabetes if you quit taking it. I remained on my Metformin with the Perinatologist's, Midwives' & Endocrinologist's blessing the entire pregnancy. I had no complications, no threat of miscarrying and no issues with glucose levels. Eat whole grains, monitor your glucose, eat your protein...if you go off the Metformin, that way you could nip the GD in the bud!
Take care and I wish you a happy journey

I was taking metformin for my 1st pregnancy adn my endo chose not to take me off it as well as this pregnancy I am still on it. Despite being on it the 1st time, I still ended up on insulin after my 28 week glucose test..then after my delivery, they never restarted the metformoin and I ended up diabetic. This time I am still on the metformin but my endo started me on insulin at about 12 weeks as my fasting morning blood sugars were above 95. He is very strict and wants them under 90.

I stayed on Metformin through my entire pregnancy with the blessing of my OB and my Endocrinologist. I went to my OB armed with all kinds of information about why I should stay on it and fortunately I didn't even need it. She was very supportive of it. Even at that, I needed to add Glyburide later in my pregnancy. Personally, I would argue to stay on it if I were you. There's lots of data out there to support staying on it.

Thank you for your responses and words of advice. I will mention the possibility of staying on Metformin when I visit my OB.
