I know its not reccomended. But I am getting older (34) and we want a large family. We have one 18 month old son and want as many as the Lord will grace us with.

My post op labs are great. My PCP gave me the go ahead and a referral back to the specialist we used to concieve our son. My food intake is great most days (I have grumpy pouch days once in a while). So I guess my question is, has anyone concieved this early post op? What is your story and insight?

Thank you!

While I know your PCP gave you the go ahead, I really think you should talk with your surgeon. I conceived early out and have run into a lot of diffculties, and I know others here have as well. It isn't recommended for a reason, the rapid weight loss is the biggest part of that. Your labs are great now, but add a baby into that mix and they may not look so great this early out. My iron tanked, and my calcium is on its way there. Its VERY hard to stay hydrated enough AND eat enough for baby and myself.

I know YOU want a large family, but you are being very very selfish. Have people done it before? yes. Is it worth rushing into knowing the consequences and risking the life of your unborn baby? no. I don't mean to judge you, but I just think you are being so selfish and i can't imagine a mom would knowingly put her baby in danger like this. If you insist on going forward I wish you luck for the sake of your baby. However you knew when you had surgery that you would have to wait to try to get pregnant. Why did you have surgery at all just to do this a few months later? anyway i hope you put the needs of your baby before your own selfish desires and i hope you reconsider. Good luck.

I'm 9 weeks preg and 12 weeks post op and it's very hard. Some days I don't even eat or drink enough for myself let alone a baby. I understand your rush to have kids but just make sure your in the best health when you do so.

Since you seem sold on this, although given the posible risks that your PCP cleared this...  but anyways.

I got pregnant with my son 7 months out from rny due to some birthcontrol problems. You will have to watch your labs very closely. I had blood draws atleast once a month. You will have to eat more to make up for the malabsorption and you will have to be very careful not to go into ketosis. It also is very hard to get enough fluids. I struggled and am even now having issues with dehydration because it is hard to get enough fluid.

It will help alot if your OB has some experience with your WLS... they will be able to anticipate any problems.

I'm 33 and I know how you feel, I felt the same way and wanted to get started on having more children before I got older, but please wait until you're at least a year to eighteen months out from surgery...I got pregnant when I was 9 months out from surgery and lost our baby..my body just couldn't handle what it was going through from my RNY...I waited until I was 19 months out from surgery and became pregnant and things are great now because I waited until my body had fully healed and was as healthy as possible.  If you get pregnant this early out, are you really thinking about your unborn babie's best interest?  I'm not judging, just trying to make you see things from a different perspective...it's only 8 more months to wait and it will go by fast. then you can feel good about having a healthy pregnancy.

While I understand your desire to get pregnant now,  I think you really need to re-think this whole idea. I also agree that you must talk to your surgeon even if you already know what they will say. There is a reason to his/her thinking. It's not done to be cruel or to keep you from having a child. It's done to protect your life and the potential life of your child.
Do you have any idea the long term  issues your child may develop? You aren't just dealing with a rough pregnancy here. There has been evidence to to prove that a children born too soon after WLS suffer from form developmental problems later on. Is that really want you want for your child?
Also look at the link between weight loss surgery and spina bifida. You are way too early out to be thinking about supporting another life within you.

here is a link that I suggest you read:

http://www.ehow.com/about_6167640_risks-pregnancy-after-gastric-bypass.html

"Fetal growth restriction is probably the most serious of risks during a pregnancy post gastric bypass surgery. Also known as IUGR, it is directly linked to the fetus not getting enough nutrients to ensure healthy growth in the womb. Fetal growth restriction usually results in miscarriage or still birth. A study done in Sweden in 1998 found that 40 percent of still births were caused by IUGR. Babies that do survive to be born can have decreased function of their bones, muscles, lungs, kidneys, or digestive tract."

  • "Nutrient deficiency during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects, abnormal fetal growth, low birth weight, miscarriage and premature birth."

It would be completely irresponsible of any mother to not completely look into all the risks of getting pregnant so soon after surgery. I hope for the future life of your child you will take care of them now by talking to your surgeon and doing your research.

I got pregnant 7 months out from surgery. It was not an intentional pregnancy, apparently my b/c pills failed to absorb. I have had to see the maternal fetal specialist, the surgeon, and the my regular practitioner religiously. Although everything appears to be okay medically, and my pregnancy has been uneventful...I live in fear that my baby will not have gotten the best start she could have. I am 36, I would have waited another year given the opportunity. I am anxiously waiting her arrival to see that she is okay. Eating is a process, getting all the things I need & she needs is sometimes so difficult I want to cry. I eat small meals 6 to 8 times a day. Can it be done, yes. But you strike me as a mother who would want the very best start for your baby, don't sell your baby short...wait if you can. I know that it is hard, and you seem to have you made your mind up...but even if you try to wait a few months...wait. Good luck to you.
