Eating

Can us RNY'ers eat more during pregnancy?  I sometimes feel like I can eat more than normal, just wondering if this is supposed to happen?  But I am also very worried that my pouch is or is going to get stretched?

I am finding I'm getting full faster but I can eat a large volume over the course of a day.  It wouldn't surprise me if hormones are making us hungrier and allowing us to eat more.  I seem to remember seeing some other RNYers saying the same thing (felt like pouch was stretching) but after baby arrived it went back to normal.

I don't have a real answer for you BUT I am always hungry and especially lately I feel like I'm eating more/all  the time. Protein is fine, take my pre-natals, enough water intake, ect BUT I'm ALWAYS hungry. You are so not alone (I'm 6  years out from RNY though but didn't eat this much or feel this way before becoming pregnant).

The hormone relaxin that your body produces during pregnancy to relax your muscles and ligaments for birth can also make your pouch relax (because it is a muscle) and let you eat more food. It has been 3 weeks since I had my baby, and my stomach is tightening up. I can eat more that I could before pregnancy, but definitely not as much as during. I just have to be very careful of portion control now.

I haven't been as hungry as I was in the earlier months, but when I eat I am definitely eating more.  This morning I ate a whole 12oz container of cantaloupe and the other day I ate a 6 inch subway sandwich and was not overly full.  YIKES.  Funny thing is I am still losing weight.

Yes, we can. The hormones allow our pouches to stretch easily. And to be honest, I have with both of my pregnancies.... You can easily shrink it back later with some self-discipline and the pouch test. That's what I have done. honestly.... not the best advice. If you can, don't do it. It isn't good for your body and the getting back on track later is very hard.

Thanks for all your responses ladies..that makes sense...I am still so worried about weight gain and I know I shouldn't be but everytime I step on the scale, I freak out because the numbers are going up and I feel like I can eat a bunch more than normal which I also don't like the feeling of.  I'm going to have to buckle down and make sure I don't go overboard with the eating just because I'm pregnant and think I can, ya know?

JUst want you to know that I am right there with you!  I feel like I can eat so much more, yet I only had surgery 1 1/2 years ago!  What kind of capacity can you eat?  For example, I will feel full on a 6 inch veggie from subway whereas before I could only eat 3/4 of a 6 inch.  I am very worried about weight gain too, actually 4 weeks ago I just started counting my calories and going back to the gym because I felt that I was gaining to quickly.  If you dont mind me asking how much have you gained?  I am also due in June : )  Are you having a boy or a girl ?

Well, the other day I admit I shouldn't of ate this but I did and couldn't believe I could eat this much, but I had a whole chili cheeseburger and fries...now, I did feel REALLY full afterwards and my pouch kinda hurt, so I know I pushed it big time, and am really trying not to do that again.  I started this pregnancy at 150lbs and I weigh 162 when I weighed this morning, which seems too much to me, but I don't know.  I will find out on Monday if it's a boy or girl..do you know what you're having yet?

P.S. Thanks for chiming in on this, it's nice to know I'm not alone in feeling this way ;-)

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 4 years out and through most of my first and second trimester I felt as though I could eat absoloutely ANYTHING and the amounts were terrifying. I would go to the drs and not gaining anything one month, but the next I would gain a full 8lbs. At my last appointment, I had managed to gain 3 lbs in 3 weeks and at 32.3 weeks I've gained a total of 22lbs. However, for some reason in the last week I lost 3lbs, but I'm hoping that's just because I ate so much over the holidays and once I got back to eating regularly and being home my body leveled off again. I know how frieghtening it is to see those numbers on the scale...I regained about 40lbs from my lowest weight in about 2 years prior to becoming pregnant. I started this pregnancy at a weight of 185 (which I managed to loose almost 25lbs on the south beach diet right before I found out) and I'm now holding steady at 204. It's hard seeing that 2 in front, but I've assured myself that I need to do whatever it takes to get thru the rest of pregnancy with a healthy baby and then its GAME time! I am holding myself to getting back on track and loosing baby weight plus some when its all said and done.

However, the last week or so as well I haven't felt like I did in the beginning. I'm hardly ever hungry now and I have to constantly remind myself to eat. I've gotten in a routine of planning out my meals and meal times the night before and I've been getting in about 1400 calories, but some days it is a stretch and the amounts have definitely decresed. I'm counting down the days til my Landen arrives and it will be here before you know it! Hang in there girl- you're NOT alone!!

Hugs
Kerri

PS- Hope baby cooperates for your ultrasound coming up.
