Well I had my gastric bypass on 10/14/10 and on New Year's Day I found out that I am 8 weeks pregnant. I got this surgery to help with my infertility so I am very excited about the pregnancy but I am also very scared. I can barely eat enough for me so how am I going to be able to eat enough for my baby? If anyone has any advise for me please respond asap. I need to know what foods to eat to get more nutrients in and how often I should eat.

Well, I'm 6 months out and 11 weeks preggers. My bari surgeon and OB both told me to eat little bits all throughout the day....as much as I can, when I can and to STAY ON TOP OF MY VITAMINS. Also, you should try to add in some carbs to keep your body out of ketosis, as that is not good for the baby. I've been having horrible morning sickness 24/7, have you? My OB prescribed Zofran and it's helping, I guess, but I still feel like I'm not eating enough. I've lost about 20 lbs since I found out I was pg. :( However, I've had two ultrasounds so far and everything is looking good and the baby has a strong heartbeat.

Just work closely with your OB, as he/she may not be familiar with what we face and get your bloodwork done ASAP to make sure you don't have any deficiencies. Good luck to you!

First off, congratulations.  I know this is by no means the ideal time to be pregnant...but what's done is done, so it's just a matter of working around obstacles to ensure you and your little one stay healthy.

The very first thing I can tell you is that you need to ensure you are not in ketosis - which means you need to ensure you add some good carbs - to your diet...NOW.  When you are early out from WLS, you are more like to be in ketosis, so it is most urgent you get out of it.  Being in ketosis can affect the brain developement of your little one.

I would talk to your surgeon and your ob/gyn and your nutritionist...get them all on board to follow up in their respective areas of expertiese to watch over you both.  You will need to get your labs done regularly (every 2-3 months) to see what vits need adjusting due to deficiencies.  If you are getting low on something...your baby will get it all and you will get nothing.  Same thing with calories...you need to up them as much as possible (but try to do it with as healthy of food as you can) so that there is enough for the both of you.  Some of the other women on here can give their input on what vits to take (not just vit ABC but they can give you specific brands if you need info in that area), but folic acid is one of the more important ones (needed for any pregnant woman, has nothing to do w/your WLS).  Staying hydrated is very important...so keep on sipping tha****er.

Most of all...breath. You are by far not the first early out to get pregnant.  It may not be an easy road for you since you will be facing eating/drinking issues, but if you work hard at it, God willing, you will have a healthy baby in your arms in a few months.

I hope to see you around often; please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have...there's probably not much that we haven't talked about on here.

Congrats again - and welcome to the board.

Thanks ladies. I have not been having much sickness (just a little bit of throwing up). What good carbs should I be eating?

Make sure its at least 100g of carbs. Good carbs are the obvious preference, but gotta do what ya gotta do
