I would like to say one last thing. The point of this was to be supportive but I guess the WL community isn't always so which I find sad. I'm here to SUPPORT and HELP anyone that is pregnant soon after surgery that is scared and has questions....not to ADVOCATE getting pregnant as soon as possible. So for anyone coming here for support on this issue I'd be more than happy to share my experience.....I'm not here to be a pregnancy pusher. God Bless.

I found this post  after doing a google search about pregnancy after gastric sleeve, which I had in March 2013. I know it's been nearly 3 years for you, but I am curious how everything went.

Hi. I just wanted to point out that a mother that gets pregnant right after bariatric surgery will not be able to take in the calories she needs to support her child. This will place her in the same category as women in 3rd world countries that get pregnant. The effect of starvation on the fetus has been studied.

In Wikipedia, under Prenatal Nutrition, the discuss the Dutch Famine: "The Dutch Famine during World War II had a profound effect on the health condition of the general public, especially women who conceived during the period of time. The period of maternal starvation is shown to have limited intrauterine growth and has been identified as one of the most important contributor to coronary heart disease as well as other chronic diseases later in life. These findings agree well with Barker’s hypothesis; it supports the theory that maternal under-nutrition leads to a lower birth weight due to restricted intrauterine development and ultimately leads to higher risks of chronic conditions in adult life [for the fetus]."

In another study, it talks about how the fetus has to change it's metabolism and it's growth to makeup for the lack of nutrition it's being deprived of. The link for that is here: http://bmb.oxfordjournals.org/content/60/1/69.full

I'm not sure if I can post links but if I can't, just do a google search for "lack of nutrition in pregnancy."

I'm sure the OP's doctor didn't want to worry her. Once you're pregnant, you're pregnantt. But that lack of nutrition may have serious consequences for her child later on in life, if not at birth, and getting pregnant right after surgery was not in the best interest of her future child.

I had the sleeve surgery October 20, 2015.  I was pregnant DURING the operation and didn't know it.  Was too early to show up on pregnancy test!  Now the morning sickness AND the post op situation has me sicker than a dog.  20 years of fertility and docs told me to give it up last December.  So we did.  And now, with a less than .001% chance of getting pregnant, I AM!  I can't keep anything down.  Lost 38 lbs and not from trying.  I just can't eat or drink anything!  I'm miserable and have a very hard time doing my job.  I'm so sick.  I hope this won't last the entire pregnancy.

I would say to women who find themselves in this situation......Just have your doc monitor your viatimin levels as I do. I've had a full LIPID PANEL pulled every 3 months and so far the only low I've had is Viatimin D in my second trimester and I know the cause...ME.. I had stop taking my Calcium supplements about 2 months ago and I have learned my lesson. Popping a Calicum Citrate as we speak. I have a GREAT amount of Folic Acid per my last blood draw, B-12 and B6 looks awesome!!! Viatimin A and K are the bomb! I'm stoked that I haven't had any deficiencies and feeling great. I failed me on the Viatimin D, so don't drag butt on the viatimin taking!! Lesson learned here I know. I take my Iron religiously, so really as long as you're monitoring things and taking your viatimins you can SOMETIMES avoid some of the "statistics" that these ladies speak of. Heck they said because I was only 6 months out I would have a low birth weight baby.....NOT!!...Now I'm measuring 4 weeks ahead and they did another anaotmy scan it showed the baby 2lbs and 6oz at 27 weeks gestation and doc thought that was rather large for that gestation. I'm on schedule for delivering a large baby per US estimates.

I don't advocate getting pregnant early out by NO stretch of the imagination, but needless to say...It's not the end of the world and your baby has no greater chance of complications in life than any other child.
