I meant more people on the board, acquaintances, etc. I know all too well that medical professionals will cite advanced maternal age every chance they get - a good friend was 41 when she began trying and doctors were pretty insensitive.

I am very sorry for your losses. I can't imagine how difficult it must be.

Regarding studies on post WLS kids - they are out there. The March of Dimes has been collecting data for (I believe) the last decade about this. Granted, in the medical realm that is still fairly "young" data but not insubstantial. There is also a great article called "Pregnancy Outcomes after Gastric Bypass surgery" which examines the outcomes of women who became pregnant before 1-year out and after 1-year out and found no difference in the outcomes for their children.

I do think that anyone who finds themself pregnant very early out needs to be very proactive in demanding labs and adequate follow-up. No one will advocate for your child as well as you will!

Maybe no one has said it to me on the board because most of the women here are here to support everyone's attempts at pregnancy; not that they're not going to tell it like they see it...but still support everyone.  After my first mc...my dr(s), DH and you all are the only ones who I bother to tell I'm pregnant any more.  No point in saying anything when it's constantly followed by a beat down...so I haven't really had anyone BUT drs tell me it's my age.  Not that I'm disregarding that it can be a factor...but it's not the ONLY factor.

I guess since I don't have the luxury of being in the States and going to the library (I'm gonna scope out the closest one when I get moved back...then I'm gonna be there every week for a while!)...so when I first began this journey, I could barely find anything online re pregnancy after WLS.  I'd hazard my un-medically educated guess that there are higher risks (maybe not astronomically higher, but somewhat higher) for someone early out than someone who waited the requested time from the drs.  I don't know if they're long-term effects...but I'd guess they're there.  Things like ketosis, which can cause life-time effects on the baby because it can effect brain development...and is more likely to happen early out than it is a year or so post-WLS.  It will not happen to EVERY women...but even one is too many when it can be avoided.

I'm really glad that's been your experience here. Not so much for me.

I'm sorry if you haven't felt welcomed here or don't feel you get whatever support you need.  I personally haven't seen what seemed like unwelcoming or non-supportive posts directed to you (not that I read every post out there) but it's not a matter of what I saw/read, it's a matter of what you have felt.  Hopefully as time progresses and you get to know more people, you will find that area of support you need.

Amen Chelle!

I noticed that this post was created by someone that has no profile info and it was created today.  After being on messageboards for years now that oftentimes is not legit to put it bluntly.

Speaking as a real WLS patient with a post op baby that got pregnant at 1 year out.... wait till your weight is stable and you have had good labs.  It isn't worth the stress and the worries.

Had you read what I said you would see I said I WOULD WORRY more about long term effects than short term. We have things all the time that say this is a good med or that and 10 years later they find out they caused all kinds of crazy things in our body or heart attacks or whatever. Weight loss surgery has been a new big boom and who knows what they will find out in ten years. So yes as in taking any new med or anything like that then that is my worry. I am very happy you have experts who know everything about weight loss surgery and pregnancy working with you and they have no questions on what will happen and all the possibilities. I bet the computer is full of correct info so you can google all you want. If arguements are what you want think again. I was saying what my fear was and your expert knowledge on everything is a little funny.

See now you're just being rude and confrontational. I don't think any of my posts really warrant that kind of sarcastic rudeness especially since I don't feel like I was rude in any of my posts. I presented my opinions and information I'd found from legitimate medical studies (not Google). I certainly didn't personally attack you.

But whatever, different strokes for different folks I guess.

RNY on 11/02/10 with
WOW....interesting post.
Just want to say congrats on your blessing.  It's good to hear that you and baby are doing well and safe despite getting pregnant so close after your surgery.  I didn't take your post as advocating for getting pregnant so quickly after surgery but simply sharing your story; for those that find themselves in this situation you give them hope.

Regardless of one having WLS or not all woman want a healthy baby and that is what i wish and pray for you.

"Pregnancy after weight-loss surgery isn't an issue. The only concern is [getting pregnant] in the period of rapid weight loss," says Philip Schauer, director of advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at the Cleveland Clinic's Bariatric and Metabolic Institute.

To protect women and their babies from potential malnutrition, doctors recommend that women not get pregnant until 18 months after surgery. A report in a November 2005 issue of the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing explained that getting pregnant at least 18 months after surgery reduces the "potential for maternal and fetal malnutrition and small-for-gestational-age infants." By then, Schauer says, a woman should have reached a stable weight and be able to provide her baby with enough nutrition.

According to my surgeon this is more of a concern with bypass versus the sleeve. I take tons of vitamins and make good food choices to make sure my baby and myself are getting all the good stuff so to speak. I'm very excited about my bundle of joy. Believe me....I've read more into this than you can imagine since I'm the one going through it ! Thank you for the blessing from a few of you. I appreciate it! I have 2 weeks left but may be induced bc my baby is getting too big....imagine that! I had the same issue with previous pregnancies....I have big babies and luckily no c-sections. I'm crossing my fingers this time to have a vaginal delivery again. I would like to say I'm NOT saying get pregnant after surgery BUT don't stress yourself if you do. I'm proof it can be fine BUT every womens body is different. I had a miscarriage prior to surgery...this was 7 years ago and was blessed to carry this child after my surgery. It's up to God in the end. God bless. And please dont make negative comments about me or my children bc you don't agree. It happened and I've done my best to take care of myself and my precious baby girl.
