Glucose Tolerance Test??

So I know I am not ready to have my glucose tolerance test yet, but I am getting prepared for when they want me to do it.  (I am 8w 3d, so I have time!)

I had my first official OB visit today, and we talked about upcoming procedures, etc...and I said "what do you do for glucose tolerance tests on us bypass patients that can't do the sugar"....her reply "can you eat M&M's???"....Ummm, NO......I asked about the A1C and she said that it wasn't accurate (her words not mine!).....So she said she had to look into it....I offered to eat grapes or other fruit because I can eat natural sugar....but the added kind is disaster.....and after being off of added sugar for like 2+ years I am sure the readings won't be accurate....

Can I just refuse this test altogether???? I already eat a GD type diet being a bypass patient, so what's the problem????

Thanks for listening...Courtney

You can absolutely refuse ANY testing you're not comfortable with. The doctor works for you, don't let them bully you or use scare tactics.

Courtney,
I asked my doc and he just decided not to make me do the test at all...I don't have previous history of it and I guess nothing during this pregnancy is giving him reason to be concerned.
So absolutely, you can refuse...
Good luck!!!

I straight up told my OB from day one that I could not and would not drink that sugar stuff for the test and they never had an issue with it...they are just making me fast and draw blood....definitely don't drink that stuff or eat anything you know will make you sick.  Best wishes!

I do not take the drink. I do fasting blood sugars and thats all. Usually about every 2 months or so just to keep an eye on them. The one huge thing I love about post op pregnancy I hated the drink to begin with lol!

My first dr. was like that.. she didnt want to accomidate me or listen to any of my concerns.. her words "oh, it will be fine!" when i asked about getting a different glucose test.. doing a full vitamin pannel when first prego, etc. so now i switched to an OB that my friend recommended and I couldnt be happier!! She has NO problem doing a full pannel.. she actually asked when i last had one.. to which I replied.. umm, like 6 months after surgery? LoL. (so never by my FP) and she was completely ok with letting me not do the drink test and instead we are doing the fasting/blood draw test!

moral of the story... if your Dr. isnt listening.. there are plenty of other DR.'s that will listen AND CARE about what you want & say~

My friend did a fasting, left to eat something and came back for another test. Problem was she went into dumping from what she ate and her blood sugar was really low. (reacive hypoglycemia).  They got the results they needed from that though- no drink for her. Some Drs dont understand RNY.  I'd talk to your surgeon and maybe have them talk to the OB if they aren't familiar w/ RNY patients.
