Registry?
I think when to start one is a personal choice- some people has lots of family that live out of town, have individuals who want to do something but have no idea what you need. One thing I personally think about registery is that it should mostly be for things needed not just because its cute. You need nursing supplies or bottles but you dont need a binky case. I waited until I knew baby was old enough to have a good chance of living ourside of me, just because I am parnoid. I ran accross people who didnt buy 'second' baby gifts or have showers for someone who already had one child- my point is my registery for my second baby was useless, no-one used it. Good luck- do your registery when you want, cause people will use it when the need to (and you can modify it along the way). I just have odd hang ups.
I registered when I was around 20 weeks. I didn't put a lot of gender-specific stuff on my registry anyway, because I figured I didnt want to have a lot of pink stuff if I have a boy in the future.
I ended up registering at Wal-Mart and Babies R Us. I did not register at Target because I had my wedding registry there, and their return policy is really really bad. So you may want to look into that before you start sending your registry info to friends and family.
Also, I already had my shower in November... and I was surprised that I only received about 4 things from my registry (out of 30+ guests). People really like to give blankets and clothes.

i work at target and the key to our return policy wth registery's is to print off your purchase log when returning stuff. you can allways update your registery when u recive things and people didnt give the cashier the registery to check it off. the purchase log and any gift recipts u get realy help return things. i know targets return policy sucks but there are ways around it.
I got married 3 years ago, so maybe their policy has changed since then. I received duplicate items... most likely because the buyer didn't hand over the registry barcode, or because the cashier didn't scan it. At any rate, I ended up with a few duplicate things. However, when I went to return them, I was told that they had a "two item per registry" return policy, AND the items that I returned could not be more than $20! Not even for store credit.

Target has the worst return policy and you can only return like $70 dollars a year there without a reciept! I wouldnt do any major registering until you find out gender etc. I know its exciting but try to wait as long as you can.....And I tried not to buy stuff until about 90 days before due date because with a reciept you have 90days for returns that way if you get a dupilicate you can always return it with your reciept.

Be careful registering too early because things may be discontinued by the time you get around to having shower(s). I had that problem and I didn't register until 20 weeks. But, in just a few weeks my Graco pack-n-play was discontinued and several items were not in stock or carried anymore.
