New Board Member
Hello Everyone and Merry Christmas!
I am new to this board. I usually hang out on the lapband board. But now I have a wonderful reason to be here. I am now 5 weeks pregnant. Early I know but still ecstatic. My husband and I are so excited. We have been wanting this so bad.
I had wls no only to be healthier but to make it easier to have a family. My band has helped me achieve these goals. I am truly grateful for my band and my wonderful surgeon.
I did have a question to ask. I am trying to get out of the mind frame to lose weight and concentrate on getting enough calories for the baby and I. Very hard thing to do.
My restriction is so good right now that on a good day I consume approximately 1000 calories. Now to me that just seems to little when you are pregnant. I talked to my surgeons office and he will not take out any fluid in my band unless I am getting to little calories or if I am acid reflux. I started tracking my calories again. Yesterday I consumed just over 800 calories.
I have an appt next wednesday with my ob/gyn and will discuss with them how many they feel I should eat. I know its good in the beginning to get over 300 calories for the baby and more at the end. How do you all get your extra calories in without going over board? I don't want to have to resort back to liquid calories in between meals. I don't have an appt with my surgeon until mid January. I have 10 cc in my band right now.
Thanks for reading

I added a little milk extra fruit and veggies. I also eat like sanwich meat with cheese twist. I eat shrimp a lot to get the protein and all in. 300 calories is very little. I just eat every hour so its a little at a time. I have to get more calories in though since I am having twins.
It will happen. The baby at your stage right now is not taking much at all. Just add a little every day. Make sure to get a little extra good carbs in. It will happen!! Congrats!!

Hi and welcome!
If you are worried about needing extra calories with a lapband, you can use 2 extra protien shakes a day. I think it is better than getting an unfill (only from personal experience where unfills can lead to immediete overeating and rapid weight gain). Since you are so early, you really don't have to worry about this for a couple months. Be sure you are getting some healthy carbs too, ketosis is bad for a baby.

Hi,
I am a lap banded also! I am just 16 weeks out, they took out all my fluid due to reflux. But I have only gained about 10 lbs in the last 4 months. It is hard to gain and I struggle with it, but I had to tell my husband to hide the scale and I do not look when I weigh in at the doctors. I hope to get better but I had been such a nut about loosing and what I was eating and working out that is had been hard. I am so exhausted most of the time, I take 2 or 3 short 20min walks a day and that really helps with energy. But once I went for 30 mins after lunch and I was exhausted!!!
I also love my band!!! Good luck!

Hey Jana!
Congratulations! You and your husband must be over-the-moon excited! I remember you from the Lap-Band board... in fact, I remember that you participated in my "Halloween Hotties" weight loss challenge over a year ago! Wow, time sure does fly!
I completely understand what you're going through as far as hoping you're getting enough calories, etc. I asked my OB the same questions when I found out I was pregnant. I was stressed out because at 20 weeks, I still hadn't gained any weight (although it was evident that my waist was getting thicker.)
I was filled to 8cc's in my 10cc band, and I finally ended up going to have half of my fluid removed (I still have 4cc's. I was lucky that I never had any morning sickness, nausea, or vomiting. But I was still concerned that my baby wasn't getting the nutrients she needed to develop properly.
My OB told me not to worry about it. Babies draw from us what they need, and then we are the ones who get the leftovers. In fact, they can actually live off our fat stores if necessary... even though that's not recommended for us.
For some reason, everyone assumes that if you don't gain weight while pregnant that you're doing something wrong... but as long as you're getting adequate nutrition and calories, you should be fine. I added some cheese, milk, and fruit to my diet. (Especially bananas, they help prevent charlie horses.)
Are you taking prenatal vitamins? A lot of those things are like horse pills. I don't know if you have a Trader Joe's near you, but they have a Folic Acid/B6/B12 sublingual melting tablet that's awesome. And I just took a regular gummy vitamin, which was approved by my doc.
By the way, I ended up getting fluid taken out of my band NOT because I couldn't eat enough... but because as the baby grew, I started getting wicked shoulder pain.
Anyway, if you have any questions or anything, don't hesitate to drop me a line. This board is an invaluable source of support and advice. I hope to see you checking in often.
