Gestational Diabetes?
As a postop RNY'er have ANY of you EVER gotten diagnosed with this? Ever heard of it happening. With my other two pregnancies I was around 300 lbs and I never got it then either.
Today I was supposed to drink that glucola (60 grams of sugar) , eat 18 jelly beans in 5 min, or just do a few random glucose tests throughout the rest of my pregnancy.
Is this safe?
Honestly, I'm gonna go for the random glucose testing. I have an appointment tomorrow with my midwife to talk more about it.

I've been here since 2002, I just like to pretend I am NEW!
The alternative that my Drs are using on me was an hA1c blood work up...it gives a testing blood work sample of approx. 3 months of your blood sugars. I did one test at 16 weeks and my second today...it's a simple one tube of blood and it's very easy to deal with. My dr also tested my fbs as well...hope that helps!

I am not a fan of the glucose testing. It is famous for giving false positives, and you have every right to refuse it. Instead, I do fasting blood work. So, I roll out of bed Saturday, head to the lab and get the blood drawn, and then go have breakfast. Its much more accurate for us. You're almost promised to dump on that drink, and chances are it won't even be accurate. Good luck!
I had it when I was 300lbs with my 1st daughter....was on insulin the last trimester..since then , lost 160lbs and was always considered insulin resistant and been on metformin foever. Got my A1C down to 5.1...my morning fasting blood sugars were around 90-95 in the very beginning of the pregnancy so my endo put me on insulin right away. He is very strict and likes AM fasting below 90. I have heard most think that 90-100 is fine..but he said that a shot of insulin is better than the baby getting too big from the extra insulin in my system from the pancreas. I'm sure many people would disagree and have, but I remind then that HE is the doctor and obviously went to school for it, NOT them! I do not ahve to take the glucose test...I have had no issues with the inculin this preg or last...!
It's a girl !! Robyn Marie...!

I had GD when I had Tyler (my first) but that was pre RNY and I was 250lbs. I was worried after being told I'm measuring 32 weeks at my 28 week appointment that the GD was creeping up again. I refused the traditional Glucose test (I'm a dumper) and so my doctor gave me the HGBA1C - Blood Test instead and that came back 5.6 and it stated normal/standard range is 4.2-5.9, so I guess I'm safe for now (knock on wood).

I noticed that we had the same surgeon. That's awesome!!!
As for the GD...I just went for my 24 week appt today and told them I couldn't do the glucose test thingy and they just opted not to make me do anything-no bloodwork, no finger *****s, etc. So I am going to just enjoy not having to go through all of that :)
Also, I didn't have any issues when I was 300 pounds and preggo with my first son...so hopefully the same will apply this time :-)
Good luck!!!
