i had rny 4 years ago and since 8/2008 i put on 60lbs :(
i went to see a surgeon and had a barium swallow done, and he said my pouch stretch significantly....so i have a appt with him on friday.

what are your thoughts on band over bypass?  i read such negative things and i wanted to hear from the ladies on this board first.  I know someone that had the lapband done but always throws up, cant hold food down, is always getting adjusted, and cant eat certain meats/foods.

my issue is portion control, i am always hungry, so i was thinking this is a good idea for restriciton.

any feedback is appreciated, thanks stephanie

Hey Stephanie-
I have a band and it has really worked for me. I lost 140lbs before I got pregnant. I'm not the perfect WLS patient but I generally follow most rules. I do throw up on ocassion. It's usually caused by eating something I shouldn't have. Everyone's bands are different and some people can eat things that I can't and visa versa. Foods that I have trouble with are tortillas, bread, and sometimes breading on meats. Generally I can tolerate most foods, especially if I chew them like I should. I just know to either avoid those foods or eat them carefully. Before pregnancy I hadn't had an adjustment for a few years.

I think the biggest challenge with having a band is compliance issues. If I wanted to I could eat "around my band". If I never got an adjustment or if I ate "slider foods" all the time I could gain every ounce back. It's just a tool and I have to use it as such.

I think you need to look at what would work best for your situation and what your level of compliance is. In the beginning you have to get adjustments pretty regularly. During the coarse you have to eat a well balanced diet starting with proteins first. You need to limit your sugar intake- even if you CAN eat it, it doesn't mean you should. It's not easy, but then again neither is any type of weight loss.

Good luck with whatever you decide! PM me if you ever have any questions.

I had 3 bands. Now I have RNY. I would pick the band over RNY at this point, if I could get another revision. I had much more portion control with the band. Only problem that seems to come up is that it is a foriegn object placed in your body and there is no guarantee how long you will tolerate it before (if any) problems arise. There is a revision board here but it is a scary place. Many people wander in there just to cause ruckus and push their particular surgery choice on desperate people. Maybe you can lurk on the Lapband board and see how they like it? Good luck.
