Not quite four months out and...(x-post)

and I just discovered I am pregnant.

No we did not plan this...yes we were using protection.

Does anyone know why there would be any reason (RNY related) that this should not result in a healthy baby? Of course I will make an appointment with the doc ASAP - literally just found out an hour ago...and needed to share/worry/seek advice/etc.

First of all. RELAX and Congrats.

You are not the first early post-op and won't be the last to get pregnant early out from surgery.
FIrst, contact your surgeon. See if they can suggest a good nuttritionist who can give you pointers on eating/vitamins while pregnant. At the very least, let your surgeoun know what's going on.

Next find an OB or MW. Ask yor surgeon if they know of a WLS-friendly OB or MW in your area. Not all doctors know about WLS and may not be able to give you the best care because they just never had the experience.
The vast majority of post-WLS pregnancies result in healthy pregnancies/babies. Since you have malabsorption, you will need to be on top of your vitamins and eat more carbs (to prevent ketosis).

Is this your first pregnancy?

Congrats!  You will have to work hard on having a healthy you and baby!  Ladies here will chime in.  AndreaU has a ton of info on post-op pregnancy.  You will have to keep your body out out of ketosis to stare far from the baby having "issues" this early out.  Make sure you take your Folic, enough & the right multi, and whatever else your body needs.

Good Luck.  Have a Happy & Heealth Pregnancy

I've been looking around trying to find a good ratio of carbs/protein during pregnancy or the grams of carbs I should be getting and I can't seem to find anything. Do you have any idea or maybe point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance...I think my brain is mud from my 3 hours of sleep last night - hard to sleep after one finds out news like this!!!

First take a deeeeeep breath. I know I stopped breathing and started sobbing when I found out, and I am further out than you. Definitely check out Andrea's blog that has been linked, and make sure you are 100% on top of your vitamins and healthy carbs. Andrea's advice to me was, I don't care how you get the carbs just get them. Obviously, better choices are better for you and baby. Milk is a good source of both carbs and protein. Make sure the OB you choose is comfortable with their own knowledge of RNY or are at least willing to be guided in that area with help from surgeon. it is very important to stay on top of your labs, even more so now than ever.

it will be ok, just gotta be even more diligant now :) Congrats!!

CONGRATS!!! You'll be fine , as many of these ladies here have already given you some great advice and definitely look at the link Leila has posted. I myself got preggos 6 months post-op/RNY and thank god I had lost 105lbs and was only 40lbs away from my goal weight, but definitely have to pay closer attention to your caloric intake and viatimins now. Ketosis is caused by high protein low carb diets (according to my nutritionist), so make sure you introduce more "good" carbs into your diet. I saw a nutritionist and my surgeon after learning about my pregnancy and they have been golden through this process. Me and the baby are doing fine and I'm sure you'll be fine too. Definitely keep us posted on your progress and again CONGRATS sweetheart :)

Thank you for all the kind words and support. I am terrified, in so many ways. This will be my second bio-child (also have 2 stepkids that live with us full time). My son is 3 and has autism. So I am scared about how he'll adjust, scared about the baby getting enough of what he/she needs, scared of gaining all my weight back (or never losing another pound)...

Oi vey. I did talk to my surgeon's office and they are going to run my labs and make an appointment to see me ASAP. SO that's a step in the right direction.

What a crazy surprise.

My oldest son is on the spectrum, and he is amazing with all of his siblings. He was two when I had my 2nd, and they are the BEST of friends still to this day. Now he reminds me to eat and makes sure I take my vitamins. His doctors actually feel like having siblings is really theraputic for him!  You and your son will do great!
