Need some reassurance.
A few days after my great experience with the ultrasound, the specialist who performed the test called me. Apparently my results for down's syndrome came back high. Though it was by 1 point that made it abnormal. Apparently my risk is 1 in 305 that the baby will have down's. Normal is 1 in 306 or better. Has anyone had the screening come back with a bad result and had everything turn out ok? In Jan I can go for an amnio to confirm my results. But I am scared of the risks involved with the amnio. Ugh! I am trying not to stress. Wise words would be appreciated!

I would wait and do more of the tests with ultrasound and all. I have had to do 2 blood tests and they do 2 ultrasounds before they make any big announcements about one thing or another. End of December I have the big anoatomy scan where they look at these two and see if they see anything alarming. Did my second blood test yesterday. I would say not to stress but thats hard. I chose to just do these tests because of the amnio risks and them having to check both babies. I would have said it either way. If these babies have something wrong it wont make a difference while they are still growing. So if something happens I will research when that time comes if it does
Good luck on making up your mind! It is very difficult!

MIne did...And a lot of other's do as well. There is a high rate of false positives on the genetic screening. My numbers started out at 1 in 630 before the testing and came back at 1 in 220 after. I opted out of the amnio because I know the high rate of false positives and because it wouldn't change me keeping the baby. I wasn't willing to risk an amnio for nothing. Everything turned out fine for me. I have heard of other women with a 1 in 20 chance even, and theirs came out just fine. Think of it this way- you only have a 1 in 305 chance of having a baby with downs. With my numbers, I was told it equaled out to be a 1-2% chance of having a baby with Downs. The risk of miscarriage from having an amnio is higher than that.
You have a 99.68% chance that your baby WON'T be affected by Down's. That's a pretty high statistic. My score came back at like 1 in 280 or something- BUT my anatomy ultrasound showed no signs of any abnormality. His neck looks fine, his head is round, his cranium looks great, the orbits are perfect, etc etc. There is absolutely nothing in the sono that is alarming. When you piece that together with the test results my chance of not having a child with down's goes up tremendously. I opted to not have an amnio because to me it wouldn't change the outcome of the pregnancy either way. Until delivery day I just sit and wait. My bias with having the sono was to double check that there wasn't anything that could be corrected in-utero. I really wish I hadn't had the blood work done and just went with the sono. Nothing is certain- there are false negatives too. It is a personal decision and a hard one to make. Goodluck with whatever you decide!

My 1st pregnancy i had the quad 4 blood test done. It came back high for down syndrome, my dr sent me to a perinatologist and a genetic counsler. I did not like the idea of going through with an amnio so I opted for higher grade ultrasounds to check for some genetic markers. After the 1st level 2 ultrasound my results were still not conclusive either way, my babys neck (nuchael fold) was measuring on the higher side and the spacing between the big toe and the rest of the toes. In the end my daughter was born 15 weeks premature (from other reasons) but she does not have Down Syndrome.
It is hard not to think about it or stress about it. I wish you the best of luck.

This is just a screening and is not 100% accurate. I had a 1 in 5 chance that my son would have down's syndrome. I had two amnio's, one at 16 weeks and it confirmed he didn't have down's syndrome and another at 24 weeks for possible genetic problems to which that also come back fine. I was told at 24 weeks that my son would most likely not make it so that's why we had the second amnio. Shortly after that things started resolving on there own. If your the type of person that needs to know then I suggest if you are going to get an amnio done that you are getting it done at a place that does these all the time. I was referred to a high risk doctor who performed these several times a week. Wishing the best for you.

Please don't worry yourself...it's not good for you or your baby.
My chance for having a baby with a genetic disorder started out at like 1 in 600. Then they did a quad screen blood test at around 16 weeks. With those results my chances were like 1 in 7000.
A one point into abnormal could be anything. It seems like there are lots of variables when it comes to tests.
Amnio scares me too...I was glad I didn't need one.
Sorry I can't offer more...Just don't stress, it won't change anything. You will love this baby no matter what, right? By the way, saw the sono pics. Gorgeous!! :) Take care of yourself.
Best wishes,
Kina

Thanks everyone. I know the chances aren't that high but you always worry that you might be the *1* that it happens to. I did opt to have more u/s measuring but again I have to wait til Jan 5th for that. Hearing everyone else who had even higher risk and turned out ok helps a lot. Thank you guys!
