This should be one of the happiest moments of my life, but i'm scared out of my mind.  I just found out that i'm pregnany today, and i'm only 5 months into my gastric by-pass.  I know they tell you to wait 2 years b-4 you consider having a child, but this just happened.  Has anyone ever had this issue, or know someone that has? I have to stress all weekend before I can even call my doctor!!!!!!!!! Please someone tell me I will be ok!!!!!

Many have found themselves pregnant right after surgery and have had healthy babies. Make sure you are on top of your vitamins and talk to your Dr about your diet needs.

I was almost 7 months post op when I found out I was expecting as well. So far everything is okay with me and baby. I am due later next month. Just make sure you take your vitamins and call your OB and Gastric bypass surgeon on Monday to inform them so they can figure out vitamins and diet. The only problem I have had is trying to make myself eat more than what I am use to now, sometimes i still get sick because I try and get what I can in for the baby. I have gained a total of 12 pounds and I am 33 weeks now, I did loose 13 pounds in my 1st trimester because of morning sickness.

You'll be okay, as I was 6 months post-op Gastric Bypass when I became pregnant and I'm now 26 weeks and everything is A-OK. As the Teresa stated just make sure to notify your surgeon and OB/GYN so they can work together to ensure you are being well taken care of. Only problem I encountered in the begining was ketosis (which is caused by a high protein low carb diet). Ketosis is something you want to stay out of ,as it can cause harm to the baby. Introduce some "good carbs" to your diet and try increasing your caloric intake day by day. It will be a challenge as a I went from 800 calories a day to about 1600-1800. It wasn't easy and it didn't happen over night, but you can do it. Your Viatimins and Prenatals are very important more than ever now. Really stay on top of that. What you want to do is have your doctor check all your viatimin levels to make sure you're at least off to a good start and or to see where you need to get more of a certain viatimin in. CONGRATS!!!! Keep us posted!

Don't worry you will be fine.  I got preg too at 5 mos.  I think this has been the most "unique" preg being my third and I do believe the surgery has a lot to do with it, but I also believe every preg is dif and THANK GOD I have much support.  One piece of advice, no matter what OB you have listen to your WLS office for preg advice, dont try to stuff yourself to get in more cals-the baby will get theirs, you WILL have more fatigue-protein+iron and make sure you keep track of your own preg  with the OB office, they really dont know what you are going through-you compared to a reg OB patient.

Take care!

OMG thanks so much for responding.  This is my first pregnancy and for starters i'm already going through changes.  I been sleep all day and craving crap. I haven't even gotten tothe doctor yet bacuase I just took a home pregnancy test yesterday; which was Friday.

The baby getting nutrients of course is my biggest concern. I was so afraid of my child coming out mal-nourished or with some kind of birth defect because the WLS drills it into you not to get pregnant for 2 years!!!

I feel a lot better now after recieving ur reply.  I just can't wait to go to call both of my doctors on Monday. lol One more day to go.

Thanks Again,

Theresa

Hi.  I too found out I was pregnant at 5 months post op.  today I am 12 weeks pregnant.  It has been really rough.  this is my fourth pregnancy, and like the other three, I have been very sick with nausea!  I had already battled nausea with my surgery so now it is just worse.  Fatigue is next in line.  I am trying really hard to keep up with my vitamins.  I was recently put on Zofran to help battle the nausea so I can keep my vits down.  Good luck and enjoy.  Im sure things will be fine.  Plus, you must be healthier now than you were 5 months ago right?

Hey Kristi,

Sorry to hear that this is hard for you.  I actually havent experienced any nausea w my surgery (the only food the effects me negatively is sugar) nor during my pregnancy. Fatigue yes, I think I have slept most of this weekend after Thanksgiving. lol

I'm gonna call my doctors first thing in the morning. I am sooo excited though.  This is my first child, and my fiance thinks i'm crazy because I spent all last night on Babies R Us. lol im just very happy right now, and i'm praying that all goes well. lol

Please keep me posted, I think i'm gonna need a few partners over this time. lol

IMPORTANT!!!!!

Maintain your vitamin regimen as the previous posters said but I have another warning for you. Be vigilent about signs of bowel obstruction. Talk to your OB and your surgeon about it and make sure you pay attention to all your symptoms even the ones you assume are pregnancy related. Reason: you are at a much greater risk of bowel adhesions as the uterus rises into the abdominal cavity in your later pregnancy. This is  especially dangerous within the first 2 years post OP.
I got pregnant 11 months after my RNY.  At 26 weeks I started having horrible back pain. Nothing reduced it and, after a week I had to go to the ER. After that i have no memory until I woke up a week later in Seattle. I found out that my condition had been misdiagnosed for a wee****il I became necrotic and had to be rushed for and emergency c-section and a bowel resection. I almost lost my life and, more importantly, my son's life. He was in the NICU for 3 months and I was in the hospital for 6! They ended up removing a ton of bowel, reversing my RNY, and stenting a blood clot in my mesenteric vein. I'm not trying to scare you. I'm just trying to say that you need to be steadfastly aware of your body over the next several months. Don't let the doctors blow off your concerns and make sure they are communicating!! The hospitalist who was taking care of me for the first week never even called my OB (who worked right upstairs) or my surgeon. He never rand the tests to diagnose the obstruction even after we asked about it specifically. He simply assumed it was pregnancy related and left me to slip into delirium then septic shock over the next 5 days. I have no memory of any of it. Side note....I was a NURSE AT THIS HOSPITAL!!!!! It was my co-workers who finally saw what was happening and got me transferred to the ICU and then to a hospital in the city capable of dealing with me and my baby. The surgeon who worked on me was one of the best in the country and he said I was the worst case bar none he'd ever seen. His exact words were "like sewing wet tissue paper with steel cable" Once again I am not trying to scare you I just don't ever want ANYONE going through what I did. My son just turned 1 last week and, by the grace of God, he seems to be a normal healthy boy. I am finally well enough to take care of him without help for a few hours at a time. But the dream of our first child definitely became a nightmare. I still don't know if there will be long term effects for him and I know this experience has shortened my life significantly. Worst of all is that it ALL could have been avoided. If the doctor had done his job and called my OB and my surgeon, this probably would have been caught early enough to do a laproscopic surgery repairing the obstruction and maintaining the pregnancy. So stay aware and take care of yourself please!! Watch for pain...any pain!! and report it immediately. Also watch for changes in your bowel patterns and vomiting. God bless you and keep you safe. Most of all, after this baby is born GET ON SOME BC (two kinds if you need to) for at least 2 years before trying again. Don't risk leaving your baby without a mother please. I know I sound kind of fanatic but if you can imagine what I've been through you can understand where I'm coming from.
