Mommy's who have Cats at home with newborns..

When my son (who's now 15 1/2) was born, we had three cats, including one that was 'mine,' a Siamese.  Occasionally the cats would get in my son's bed before he was born, but after he was born they very rarely would get up there.  If they did, a loud 'pssttt!' would usually suffice to chase them off and they quit going up there.  Though I can't say it never happens, the chances of your cat suffocating the baby are very very very slim.  My Siamese cat just preferred to pretend he didn't exist.  If I laid down and took a nap with my son on one arm, my cat would come lay on the other arm.   None of them ever hurt him.

One of my cats died when my son was about 1 years old and we got a kitten for him.  We still have her (she's 14 1/2 now).  She's 'his' cat, doesn't want anything to do with anyone else.  She sleeps in his room, comes and gets him at bedtime, tucks him in at night and waits until he goes to sleep before coming out to do her business and get something to eat...then goes back and guards his bedroom.  If I sneak in his room for something in the middle of the night, she's right there wanting to know what I'm doing disturbing 'her' baby.  Even though he was a small toddler when we got her, she never scratched him even when he'd pick her up wrong.  Hopefully your little girl will make friends with one of your cats in the same way.

When my daughter was born we bought a mesh crib cover to keep the cats out of her crib.  They would not jump on the mesh and it did the job fine.

when i was pregnant, i had the same question, we have two cats, that hve been the center of the house since they were brought home....well, i read somewhere - dont ask me where....that said to put filled laytex ballons in the crib until the baby begins to sleep in it.  well prior to that the cat will go to jump in, likely landing on a balloon and it will scare him...

worked for us....

good luck

I wondered how my cats would react to a baby as well, but they just sniffed him a bit and then lost interest. My male cat, who is very cuddly, used to sleep in my son's pack n play (where he slept for the first few months before we moved him to his own room) but only when it wasn't occupied.
I doubt your cats would hurt the baby even if they did sleep with it, the bigger problem is that having them jumping in and out of the bed would likely wake your wee one up, and no one wants that!
Start getting the cats used to the idea of change now. When you're getting up to feed the baby in the middle of the night, you aren't likely to want to the cats in bed with you anyway. They'll get all excited about you being up and around at strange hours and will probably makes pests of themselves. Buy some earplugs and lock them out, they'll complain for a few days and then they'll get over it.
The balloons idea is good though, for teaching them to stay out of the crib.
