Should I insist on an ultrasound
I have lost 5 pounds in the last month and I will be 36 weeks. I am concerned about her growth. The problem is my doctor has no experience with GB patients and treats me like I am like all of her other patients. However I know that I am not eating as much as a regular patient. I also know of the things I do eat I am not absorbing as much as I should. So I am concerned about the growth of the baby. So should I insist on an ultrasound at my next appointment?
I have had three boys since RNY and I was at least three years out. I lost weight almost all through the pregnancies. I gained a total of 10 pounds the entire time and it was in the middle. I had them about 38 weeks and they all weighted between 5.4 to 5.7. All were very healthy and running around like mad boys. LOL I never ate like a normal preggo I guess. I never had to wear preggo clothes, just went up a size or two in normal clothes.
I would definatly insist on an ultrasound! This doesn't mean that this is happening or will hapen to you and I don't mean to scare anyone but my friend just ended up having her baby at 33 weeks by emergency c-section because she was loosing weight and when they did an ultrasound to make sure her baby was okay her OB realized that the baby's placenta had stopped working and the baby was getting no nutrients. Her baby boy was delivered safely and weighed in at 3.5 pounds. He is a tough little guy and will do just fine but that's still scary! She had him on November 12th. She was not a weightloss patient btw. I would just want to be checked for any precautions. I was loosing weight a few weeks ago and my OB who is a high risk OB, ordered an ultrasound on me...our little girl showed to be weighing around 3.2 pounds at 30 weeks. It was reassuring to know that my weightloss was due to my own body and not her little body.
Thanks everyone. I think based on everyone's responses its better to be safe than sorry. I will insist on an ultrasound. It won't hurt them to order one. It may be nothing but since I am so close to my due date I think its best to just check and make sure everything is alright.
I am glad to see I am not the only one who went through it.

Late-term ultrasounds for size can be notoriously off-base. My daughter was supposed to be more than a pound and a half heavier than she actually was, based on a 37 week ultrasound. I wouldn't be as worried about the estimated size as I'd be about placenta function, blood flow, etc. My bariatric surgeon said it's not uncommon for WLS patients to have smaller babies than average, but they tend to be very healthy and catch up to their pre-WLS siblings' heights by age 5 or so (but lower BMI!)
