3D/4D Ultrasounds

How many weeks is the best time to get really good 3D/4D images? I hear if you're too far along the baby is too big for a good view and too early not really capturing what the baby may really look like. Just trying to get to the right gestation before I invest hundreds of dollars (expensive) on getting these pictures.

I went around 25 weeks and it was still a bit too soon.  I think the best is around 28 weeks.

My clinic suggests 30- 33 weeks for 3D face pics. Too early and the baby looks like a little skeleton/alien, too late and things are too cramped in there for a good picture.

By 30 wks, the baby is ~3 lbs and starting to get some fat  so you'll get cute chubby cheek pics.

ETA: the 3D ultrasounds are so cool. I had them routinely with my twins to check for growth, by 30 weeks you could also clearly tell that the babies looked just like DH (they have his nose a lips), it was so adorable.

I went at 15 weeks to know the sex early. The images were great but the baby still had an enlarged head at that age, as expected. But I really wanted to know since we have 2 boys and were trying for a girl. We were happy to see HIS face regardless! LOL. This is the link to the place I used here in GA and you can see under pricing, the recomended ages. They also have a cool video and some pictures to look at. http://imageofamiracle.com/index.php?action=page_display&Pag eID=5

I had initally planned on scheduling mine later in my pregnancy, but after getting the advice on here and calling the 3D place by our house I was informed 26-30 weeks is the best time. I had mine scheduled for December 8th, but the tech called and asked if we could move it to Dec 16th and she assured me that the pictures would be even that much better with me being 28 weeks and 4 days :) I'm so stinkin excited that again the time is taking forever...I remember how slowly time went til my anatomy scan and now this...I will admit though it's kind of fun because after you find out the sex there really aren't any really good things coming up but labor and this appointment has really given me something to look forward to!!

I had mine at 27w 4d.  The place I went to actually has a website with a "best time" calendar.  Just click on your due date, and it tells you when to come in for the best pictures.  Here's the link:

http://www.prenatalpeek.com/calendar.html

According to the website, it says you should come in between December 4th and January 7th. :)

Thanks so much Ladies, cause I wanted to make sure before I pay $100+ for some of these pics I was getting my money's worth. I think I'll wait until I'm 29-30 weeks and then I'll go for it. Again thanks as the website links you left really helped.

I had mine today, but I did not know I was getting one. I showed up for what I thought was a routine growth scan, and the tech did the 3D. I really could have cared less, because they creep me out, but it was OK. Baby did not cooperate though, only got side views which where weird because it looked like he was sucking in placenta! So gross to me, but hey some people like it.
